View Full Version : Did I break the shifting linkage inside the tranny?

After I got my Jeep back together I discover that the internal linkage seems to be broken. When I shift it through the gears, nothing happens. The reason I think it may be borken is that when the motor was out, the bracing holding up the tranny fell and the tranny was held up by the shifter linkage. I was thinking the the weight of the tranny may have damaged the internal linkage. If this is the problem, can this be repaired by pulling the pan and repair/replace what is broken or does the tranny need to be dropped and disassembled?

This is a T-400 in a 75 waggie

I also have several T-400's laying around, can I pull the needed parts from them?

I would think that the external linkage would bend or fail before anything inside. I don't have an auto in my 76, but the 76 TSM says that the linkage can be adjusted. There are a dozen trans tests for not shifting. No.1 is check fluid level. No.2 is check manual linkage. Since it is a GM, should be easy to get new parts if yours are bent.

Well, when it stops hailing, I will drop the pan and see what I find!

i was tryin to find a pic on the net but...google = irrelevant results, the shaft that the external linkage hooks to goes through the case, inside pan you'll see a toothed sprocket, there will be a big spring with a roller tip that bolts to valve body and roller tip fits into toothed sprocket, hooked to all this is a little "s" shaped hook this connects the linkage to what is called the manual valve in the valve body - so long story short if you find any of this mess in the pan - crapola, oh yea the shaft goes through the case, the sprocket thing goes on, and a 11/16 or 3/4"( don't remember )nut holds this all together and the end of the shaft is supported by the case wall - the same case wall is the "tunnel" that all the clutches and so forth are in so hopefully that didn't break - hope this makes sense and good luck

The nut on the inside of the linkage may be loose I had to drop the pan on mine the other day to fix mine, I had forgot to tighten it I guess when I assembled the trans. i went to make sure it was in park before firing the caddy 500 up and the linkage shaft sticking out just spun round and round smile.gif
