View Full Version : So how weak is the NP229

I have an 88 GW and I'm guessing I have the NP 229 as I haven't crawled under to actually check, but I do have all the vacuum stuff in the cab. Anyways how weak is the transfer case really?

My plans include a 4 inch spring lift, a 2 inch body lift, some fender trimming, and 33's on 15 inch wheels. I'll probaly re-gear to 4.10s and throw-in some cheapy lockrites or aussies. I will mostly be wheeling down the beach with my kayak trailer in tow searching for reds and sharks, but at some point I would like to go to Ouray and maybe hit up the new Katemcy Rocks when it opens.

Should I swap out the case to something else?

Mine's been fine for rocks and some mud so far. I have pretty much the same setup you are going for...when I grenade it I'll go NP208.

The 229 turned into junk one day after 2 years of bad vibes from 4hi used on the highway for winter driving conditions. It only had 200K on it. :D

So I take it that it isn't something I need to swap out before doing my lift and tires then. I found an np208 from a J10 with the fron driveshaft, but no shifter assembly for $125.00. How hard is sourcing a shifter for this thing?

Switching to a 208 would be a personal preference in my opinion. The 229 flag shifter will connect to the 208. Just remove the parts for the 2wd/4wd vacuum shifter. That is how I did mine.

So then, how will I run in 2wd? My shifter only has 4Hi and 4Lo.

There should be a vacuum shifter on the lower part of dash to the right of the steering column that you use for 2wd/4wd shifting. You can not shift to low range until you 4wd is engaged. You can't shift to 2wd if you are in low range.

I guess I will need to install manual locking hubs up front to run in 2wd. I'm just so used to having a cheby with 2H-N-4H-4L on the shifter.

The Jeep 208 is 2Hi-4Hi-N-4Lo. All mechanical, no vacuum. You do not need manual hubs to run a 208 if you don't mind the front driveline turning while you are rolling in 2WD. I ran mine with full time hubs for a few years before I put manual hubs on.

Can you feel positive engagement with the flag shifter or do you have to piddle with it?

It will feel fine. I have a Ford shifter on mine (since I have an NP435) and I am using a Jeep NP208 with a Ford input gear. The detents in the t-case are heavy enough so far.

And as far as keeping your NP229 alive as long as possible; when you wheel, only ONLY ONLY ONLY wheel in 4-low. Otherwise you are slipping the viscous coupler all the time.

Its not difficult to locate a Jeep 208 flag shifter. It may take a little time searching, but you'll surely come accross someone who is parting out a 208-equipped FSJ

Junkyards are you friend:thumbsup:

Get with Jeepskater433, I'm sure he knows of some good yards down in the Houston area

Oh, so you're the guy who bought the red Waggy from Daniel. Cool. Its not far from being a very nice rig.

You mean you want a GM-type shifter? I heard they won't work on the Jeep 208,but will on the Dodge 208 which has the same input spline count as the Jeep 208 but is passenger drop

Everything now works on the Jeep save for the rear window and it is the switches, both front and rear. I am currently using some speaker wire and a UPS battery to operate it until I can source a good dash switch. Heck, it even has the emissions output of a Honda Civic according to the smog report.

I shift mine by feel. It is not like you can look down and double check the shift pattern while driving anyway. The NP229 shifter works fine on a 208.

get a 231 w/SYE (available all day for about 200, I just sold a spare for about that) , for about $75 you can get used dodge planetaries and chain - as beefy if not more so than a Jeep 208.

I have a 228(crappier version of 229) in my waggy on 35s and I have wheeled it with no problems other than the linkage bushings.

But I have a 208 in the garage waiting...

kind of off topic but let me check in my storage and see if i still have the switches from my old 89 I parted out, might be able to help you out, I know how much of pain it is to not be able to roll down the back window
