a couple of weeks ago I bought a 74 chero, the t-case makes a very bad noise when moving/cornering. There was no fluid in the t-case so i did the 30wt/limited slip thing. The transmission was not bolted to crossmember, so I did that. Also there was no front driveline and it was engaged in e-drive. I fixed all of this stuff and the noise was still there. It sounded like a chain so I checked the chain slack through the fill plug, and it only had about a 1/4 in. so I figured it was the cones so I went and bought a new qt from the salvage yard and after I bought it I realized that the donor 78 chero had lockable hubs that had been removed and sold. This tells me that this new tc has the pt conversion. here is my questions, how do I check to see if it has been converted. The front yoke (on the new case) will not spin independently from the rear but it does have about a 1/4 turn of slop. I was also wondering if you had to have lockable hubs if you do have a qt with conversion? I want to put the new one in so I need help to figure it out before something gets tore up after the install. please help!!! qt problems

you should be able to turn the front yoke independently if it has part time, unless the shift selector is locked in. You don't have to have locking hubs with the p/t kit. If you want to pull it apart and look at it, it's no big deal. It uses silicone instead of a paper gasket.

what do you mean by the shift selector. This is another thing I'm confused on. I have the reducer so I have what looks like an emergency brake handle under the dash that says low range for the reducer but there is nothing else except for the e-drive switch. also if you dont have locking hubs w/ pt kit then is it always in 2 wheel drive unless you turn on the e-drive, thanks.

also, if I did take it apart, I dont know what the pt kit looks like.

Apply vacume to one side of the shift motor, see if the yolks turn independently, if not then apply Vac to the other port. If you can not get the yolks to turn independently after that, then put a socket on one of the yolk nuts and stop the other from turning apply force to get the yolk to slip, could be up to 150 ft Lbs or so to get this to happen. MUST be in Normal mode to slip, if you get the yolks to slip then it has not been converted to P/T

I guess at this point what I need to know is not whether this qt has been converted to pt or not but given the fact that I dont know, and install it anyway ,and if I install it with the OEM full time hubs, will I tear anything up. Because once I install it I should be able to figure out if it is a converted pt.

Well why i have been waiting for a response from a fellow fsj guy, I went out and sucked on the vacum port that disengages the e-drive and I heard something happening in tc and now the front yoke does spin independently. So this would lead me to believe that it is a pt conversion. so will it tear anything up if I install it asap in my chero without lock in hubs, if it wont, is it wise to get them and what would be the point of getting lockable hubs.

Sounds like it is P/T then. You could run it with the continuos hubs, however it does defeat the purpose of the P/T conversion. I would put the manual hubs in to save on the wear and tear on the front end joints and general wear and tear.

well if I stay with the full time hubs with the pt conversion its still in 2 wheel drive, right? just as long as the e-drive is not on? thanks for helping.

Yes do not run the T-Case Locked in 4 Wheeldrive on high traction surfaces, it will cause damage.
