paint - 1980 dark green

Can anyone point me in the right direction for paint? I have a 1980 j10, dark green (OE is the paint code). The factory paint is beyond shot, missing in some places. I've started sanding down, removing trim, bumpers, etc. etc.

I can't seem to find a good source for the OE 1980 dark green jeep paint. Can anyone help?

Also, I don't know which TYPE of paint to use....acrylic enamel, urethane, etc.? I've never painted before, so it's a learning experience and I don't want to go wrong.

There's got to be a paint supplier local to you somewhere. Body shops rarely have their stuff shipped in via internet. Find your local supplier and they can look up the code and mix what you need on the spot. Plus they will be able to fill you in on the different paint types and +/- of each type and tips for shooting each.

Agreed. You local paint shop will have a catalog of close if not full OEM colors. They'll certainly have 1980 green :)

That is a good idea. I'll call a few of the local body/paint shops to get info on the local suppliers ( I have NO idea where/who they are! ).

Wow, sometimes I feel like an idiot. A quick google search of "auto paint supplies roanoke va" shows there is a ppg/omni automotive paint dealer 6 miles from my house:banghead:

Pretty sure that is called Cumberland Green. At least it was in 79.

My 81 is sherwood green if it helps any

In '80, it was called dark metallic green. I've seen the cumberland and sherwood, both are a little different.

Yes, it is different and a very nice green. It will have fine metallic in it. PPG is a great paint also. Metallic is harder to shoot than plain colors as the flakes tend to lay flatter and mute the effect if it dries to slowly. Talk to the guys a PPG and get their brochures on the various paints. I haven't painted anything for plenty of years now but if I was doing it in my yard... again, and doing metallic, I'd shoot lacquer. I've done well with acrylic enamel also but never tried shooting it with flake... and don't know if anyone does. Ok... I'm sure that dates my work. ;)
