After the second OEM instrument panel on my 81 Chero FSJ went up in smoke I decided to build my own. All went well with the exception of the fuel gauge. I got a sender fron BJ's and the right Autometer gauge and installed them. Here is what's driving me nuts....
When the sender is out of the tank and wired up, all checks out fine. After it's back in the tank, the Gremlins take over. The gauge readings swing when I accelerate or brake and the readings at rest are never accurate. The tank is poly and I have added a dedicated ground to the sender but it still ain't right. Any and all ideas will be appreciated. I've had that sender in and out of the tank about 20 times so far and I'm about to go Postal. Every time it's out of the tank, the gauge registers correctly.

Accurate gauges you are aking for sommething that does not exhist. I only have three and I installed them, Mechanical Oil, Mechanical Temp and a tach.

Good luck, some day I will try what you are doing. Maybe some day.

RB that swing sounds like a perfectly working sender to me. thats as good as it gets in the long skinny poly tanks. the length of the float arm makes the sender jumpy.

I am probably going to have the same problem you are when I get to my gas gauge ( also wacked.) but if your sender is working out of the tank, then what is different? is the tank level? is the sender geting bound up anywhere or tweeked after you get it mounted? and as far as the swing when braking or accelerating, could you possibly mount the float at a different angle (90degrees different) so the fuel "slosh" dosent effect it as much? I dont think there are any baffels in the tanks huh?

I know the newer senders for the factory guages have an enclosed and very rigid resistor strip as opposed to the older style. It takes some effort to move it and when you let go it falls down slowly. The others would just bounce up and down if the wind blew on them. This new style is working good in my wags with poly tanks.
