i am working on getting electrical system up to par.how many grounds should i have on the motor and where should they go?having a problem with instuments cluster lights, the lights for the switches arent working i think its the ground.where does the ground for the cluster go and what size wire is it?what kind of reading do you get on your ammeter gauge?mine reads just over the 0 mark to the positive side.thanks for the help
Should be ground strap/cables between batt/eng and eng/frame. Not sure what year started it it but the later ones also have a ground wire from the batt to the body(fenderwell I think).
Odds are in NJ the body mount bolts are pretty rough by now and that'd be the only body/chassis ground so I would add a ground strap between the batt and someplace on the firewall(free of paint etc). I've added that extra ground using marine batt terminals with the post allowing multiple cables to a couple rigs where the dash/lights/gauges etc were acting goofy.

Joe's got it right, and here's an article you might find useful, too
www.geocities.com/lindeleasley/jeep_grounds.html (http://www.geocities.com/lindeleasley/jeep_grounds.html)
hopefully, you'll find something you can use there.
