I have heard that any Jeep wag before '75 should take regular gasoline. I've had a '69 Jeep that I have been working on for about a month and am almost done. My questions are:
Does this Wag it really have to have regular?
Have I cause problems by using unleaded or would the past owner have?
Do I need to go ahead and start using the fuel additive?
How can I tell if it def takes regular or unleaded?
I know thats alot of questions but some will answer each other.

A multitude of tests by EPA & industry clearly stated the likelihood of premature exhaust valve failure is high on engines using unleaded gasoline that are designed for leaded gas. From what I've heard though, the engine will still live pretty long. Next time you need a rebuild use hardened exhaust valves, seats, and inserts. Until you get too that juncture in time use either Powersheild by Lubrizol or Valvemaster by Dupont (these were tested by the EPA & got positive results)

JNErotten,
Does this Wag it really have to have regular? ...No...but your timming may have to be adjusted to suit the octane rating that your using.
Have I cause problems by using unleaded or would the past owner have?... Depending on how much has been burnt, damage to valve seats may occur.
Do I need to go ahead and start using the fuel additive?... Yes use an upper cylinder lubricant, probally as smithhl has discribed. I used unleaded and Gas(propane) in my 360, but used a upper cylinder lubricant that is feed into the engine by vaccum(?) from a dispencer bottle.
How can I tell if it def takes regular or unleaded?... I would say that you should be running regular/super, I dont think unleaded was available in 1969. Not in Australia anyway, not sure about the US though?
