Hey all is there any advice you could give me. Im changing my pinion seal tomorrow in the j10 since its leaking like crazy. Ive never done it before, and Ive searched the internet high and low and cant find either a good write up or some good advice on what to do. Im mostly concerned about what I need to torque the yoke to and if I need to check the preload.

Pinion nut torque is 250ft lbs. They can be a bear to get off. The trick I use is to wedge a breaker bar with the proper sized socket (1 1/8" if I remember correctly) against the ground. Then drive the truck in the appropriate direction a couple feet to break the nut loose. The yoke will slide right off once the nut is off.

ive got access to an impact gun at the high school, so im not to worried about removal just what to do when I put it back together but that breaker bar idea is great, I never thought of that.

Pete's right. These things can be an absolute pita. Hope yours busts loose easier than a prior J truck we used to own.

We went thru 2 impact's and a breaker bar. Wouldn't budge.

Lindel was here for this one. He and Bill went to Sears and bought the biggest impact wrench they had.

4 hours later and a few choice words, it gave way.

Mine on the other hand came right off with my IR impact.

check the nut and pinion before you remove it ---if the nut is tight and the pinion is loose--push it up and down with the driveshaft off, there may be more problems than just a seal i;e bad bearings

Also thank you for the heads up at how hard it might be to remove it since its probably the original seal and been on the truck for 30+ years. Im still curious though on what all I need to do when I install it like preload torque etc.

Nothing really. Pull out the yoke, replace the seal, reinstall the yoke to the proper torque and you are done. There are no crush sleeves or other silliness in a Dana 44.

i did my rear pinion seal earlier this year, the yoke came off pretty easy after using my impact to loosen the nut. I pulled the seal out with a screwdriver and also the curved end of a brake tool. The new seal went in easy, and kit came with a new yoke nut that seems to be some sort of "use once" nut that fits itself torquing to the yoke to hold tight. I went as tight as I could with my impact.

I could be wrong about that "use once nut" but it seemed like it to me.

Okay I replaced the seal yesterday, the hardest part was getting the old seal out but now everything is good no more leaks:D

I just had mine done the other day and it was $50 out the door. $16 of which was parts and the rest is labor. It took maybe 20 minutes for the guys at the shop, woulda taken me all day.
