Okay...been thinking about this for a while and now I need to plan it so I can get this work down before cold weather sets in.
What: Wrench-O-Thon
When: Saturday, October 10th, 2009...start at 10:00am or earlier
Where: 1303 Marietta Drive, Fort Wayne, Indiana, 46804
Here is a Google Map Link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1303+Marietta+Drive,+Fort+Wayne,+IN&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=46.630055,78.837891&ie=UTF8&ll=41.07339,-85.250478&spn=0.002726,0.004812&t=h&z=18
What needs to be done:
Engine on the stand:
Intake manifold needs installed.
4BBL carb needs installed.
Donor distributor from J20 needs installed.
TFI parts/wires needs installed.
Larger oil pan and pick needs to installed or old pan needs cleaned up and painted.
Oil pump midplate needs installed.
Chrome valve covers needs installed.
I may have some of this done before the WOT.
It was suggested to replace valve seals and maybe the rear main seal while the engine was on the stand, Comments?
(I will need to order these parts of we decide to perform this work)
Engine in 1982 J10:
Needs pulled and the truck prepped to accept motor on stand.
Front clip:
Needs reassembled from using better rusty parts to replace badly rotten parts.
Weather:
I do not know if it will cold or wet or ...whatever...but think warm!
From what I can gather, I am guessing that the temperatures will be in the upper 60's, lower 70's.
My J10 will be worked on outside, while the engine will be worked on inside.
If the weather does not hold out or folks can not make that date, the backup date will be Saturday, November 7, 2009.
Food:
I will provide grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, condiments, potato chips, various salads (pasta salad) and cake/pie.
Let me know if you have any sugar or other medical issues that we need to know about.
Also taking requests for dishes!
While I will have an assortment of 2 Liters of soda/pop to choose from, I would request you tell me what soda/pop you would prefer.
No beer or other alcoholic beverages will be provided.
Tools:
I have some tools and have a large compressor.
You are welcome to bring your tools, (maybe even suggest it) but I request that we somehow keep them separated.
I will have a extra hook ups if you wish to bring your pneumatic tools.
RSVP
I would request that you let me know if you will be coming so I can plan for the food.
Also, let me know if I need to get anything, like parts, gaskets, tools, etc...
Goals:
Okay, I have a lot to get done in one day.
If I can get the old engine out and the new engine in...I will be happy.
I would love get far enough work completed to fire up the new engine.
But, if we do not get every done, that will okay too...we just need to have a good time and enjoy each other's company.

Things you might also need.....
Check and see if your carb takes a 3/8 gas line. If so we need somthing to bump the stock 5/16 up to 3/8, or a way to drop it down to 5/16 at the carb. Some brass fittings or somthing.
You ever had the throttle, and kickdown hooked up to this carb? If not get the Edelbrock Chrysler kit.

Looks like rain this weekend.
40% chance with highs in the low 60. (as of Tuesday Morning)
There is a fair amount of work to do on the spare/new motor that we can do in my garage.
(that's where it's at...on my engine stand.)
Also, we can work on the truck/old motor in the garage.
(unhook, unbolt, etc)
We might be able to pull the motor out of the truck in the garage, but it will be tight on space.
Any thoughts for moving it to another weekend, or should we continue and try to get as much work done as we can?

Wish I could help, but it would be a little far for me to commute. If you get a EZUp canopy, that would give you some more somewhat dry space in the driveway. You can pick up a cheapy ezup for around $60 - $70 or so. They always come in handy. Just a thought.

I've got one of those also...I dunno how useful it will be as the truck would 'fill' up a 10' x 10' space.
Also, its not that tall...so it would be in the way if try to pull an engine under it.

Larry I ordered a PVC Grommet, but not the PVC..thought we might run out to Autozone and get a cheapie
I need to replace that 727 front pump seal!
As I am running short on time..is that something I can pick up and my local McParts store?
I do not have a drill large enough to operate the Oil Pump Priming tool.
3/8" drill is all I have.
I have a vice mounted to a work bench.
Bolts are gonna be nice...for we cleaned up for the WOT and lots of little things have been moved...:(

JeepBountyHunter and shackwrrr have both told me that have to work and will not be able to attend the WOT.
You will be missed.
For those coming...look at the maps carefully.
Indiana State Route 14 is torn up with construction and the street sign to my road is down.
Quick Tip:
At the stop light, River Oak Run is on the right and Carnagie Road on the left, which leads up to a Bandidos Mexican Restaurant.
Marietta Drive is the very next road on the left...same side of the road as Bandidos.

This Forum will not be far away. :)
My garage doubles has my PC shop.
If you have a PC that needs worked on or cleaned up or whatever,
please bring it.
PC work is kinda what I do and would be happy to work on it.
Just bring the PC, no monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables...I will have all that on my workbench.
If I have some extra ram that will work or you need some software (like Office) we can arrange to have that installed.
If you have old PC that is junk...bring it as well, as I will cannibalize what parts that are usable and scrap the rest.
While you maybe shocked at the amount of IT Gear I have (PC, parts of PC, servers, switches, routers, junk),
the collection it far less that last year before I moved.
The amount of PC crap I threw out was staggering...I was even surprized I had so much.

I want to publicly Thank Rick, Larry and Tom for coming down and helping me with my J10 Project.
Without their help, my project would not have gotten as far as it has.
We got a lot accomplished today.
My wife was even surprised we got as much done as we did.
While we ran into some issues, all were solved except one.
Rick jumped right in and started working on unhooking the old 360 from the J10, while I helped Larry with the finishing touches with the new engine.
Tom showed up later and assisted with hooking up new 360.
My son Nathan was a huge help as he jumped in where he was needed.

Also, my wallet is still smoking.
I need to think about it.
If we have a second WOT, my wife mentioned there be will less food.

So is the rain day Nov. 7 still good for a phase 2?

I can try for another round. Although I would like to know more of the actual situation as far as hardware isuues up front. I have tons of that stuff around here. But like Bryan mentioned , his wallet needs to make that call.

Yes, this was bad and like I mentioned earlier, during the clean up, the little things I had laid out were moved and thus lost.
I knew better and I know about the Dollar Store zip-lock baggie and a Sharpie method, but failed to follow through.
This where I am very thankful that Larry had just gone through recent build and had some experince in what goes to where.
I truely apologize if folks showed up for a simple project and then thought, "Oh My..what has Bryan done (or haven't done)"
Overall, I am think it all turned out well.
What I enjoyed was how well we all worked together.
But like Bryan mentioned , his wallet needs to make that call.
At this point in time, my wallet says NO to a November 7 WOT.

At the end of the day, as it was getting dark and we were all tired and wanted to go home, the distributor was the stopping point.
The distributor gear that is matched to the cam gear in the new engine,
would not properly work on the new distributor that Larry has installed the springs and weights.
The plan now is to get another Motorcraft distributor from my local McParts store and see if the distributor gear will fit.
Then, move the springs and weights from the distributor that was ready to go to this new McParts store unit.
Yes, there are many smaller tasks for me to do, like connect the exhaust.
I will take the advice given and while I have the exhaust manifolds off, have the studs replaced.
There were some accessories and parts I did a rush paint job on.
If you go back and look at the pic of the truck in the garage, the white areas on A/C compressor pump are the unpainted areas.
The power steering pump was cleaned, but not painted.
Now that I have some time, I may go back and clean paint some more.
I maybe just mask off some areas with painters tape and just hit these items with the rattle can.
I promise, if I take anything off to paint, that I will bag, tag and label.
The accessories were not all installed, like the alternator and pulleys (of which I need some bolts)
There was one part that Larry was planning to rework as the accessory bolt hole in the head were not the same.
The belts and hoses look okay, but now would be a great time to replace them.
The front clip needs reinstalled.
My desire was to get the Radiator Core Support and inner fenders media blasted and powder coated Black.
Will this happen...I dunno.
While the front clip being off, may have caused me a lot more work (found much rust and rot) it was very nice to work on the engine with it not in the way.
Any other observations?

You need 4 3/4" 3/8" bolts for the crank pully,I think they are standard course thread, you need 4 5/16 x1" bolts fot the water pump pulley.I believe originally it would have had studs(better)with course in&fine out. Also, you need to address the rear lower corners of the front fenders, either by fabbing patches,or buying said patches.I can bring my mig next time.Clean the radiator inside&out, and give it good coat of black paint.Make sure you have matching hood release latches! And mabe a rhino for the front!

Yes, I am sure I have those bolts somewhere, but it might easier to buy new.
That is an easy problem to solve

Yes, I know, but the ones in back year that come off the truck (the ones I purchased to repair accident damage)
are far worse than that one I wanna use.
IMHO, other than the lower corners, those fenders are in good shape.
Clean the radiator inside&out, and give it good coat of black paint. Excellent Tip!
Make sure you have matching hood release latches! And mabe a rhino for the front! Yup...I've got a mis-match for those latches.
In the barn, I have a complete Rhino setup, but go back and forth if a Rhino looks good on a browless cab.
While I originally did not like the Pig Nosed grill...that one you gave I really liked...so Pig Nosed it is for now.

More things:Clean& paint throttle cable bracket&install,as well as carb, fuel lines&tvr linkage. I have most of this covered.
Bought a new carb plate that has throttle cable bracket built in.
I dunno how it will work, but I'm gonna give it a try.
If not, then I will got back the crappy setup I had on my J20.
My carb has been freshly rebuilt from BillyGoat.
It has a manual choke, so I either need to install a electric choke kit or a manual choke cable into the cab.
Plug exhaust manifold, replace studs, paint&install. I need to cut off those 9/16-18UNF bolts to the proper length and install them.
My local NAPA has a machine shop and they do great work for smaller jobs.
I am planning to take those exhaust manifolds over and have the studs replaced.
Also fan!,Digup long bolts for core support, The bolts for the Core Support were realy bad.
I bought a set of long bolts and body mount from JeepBountyHunter
I have a coffee can FULL of 5/16 fender bolts from fsj's! I may take you up on this.
Maybe if I drive your PC back to you, I'll bring home that can of bolts.
Thank You Rick for the feedback.
I plan to use all these comments as an 'Action Item List' to complete my project.

Larry UGHHH!!
That would way too easy to use that distributor!
I thought I was required to do things the hard way! HAHAHA
Why did we not think to use that distributor?
Well...it was late and we all tired...it was long but very productive day.
I am busy tonight, but tomorrow evening, I will try see if this dizzy will accept the gear.
Any other observations?
Yes there was. Not engine bay related but wheel related. While we had the front passengerside jacked up I was playing with your tire. Your upper ball joint is history and so are your axle U joints. I woouldn't be surprised if the lower was damaged as well.
Not sure if you knew this. You may want to give your whole drive train a once over. Be a shame to get it altogether only to be sidelined by something simple to fix.. I said simple not cheap... Then again it is not all that expensive for new stuff. That would make a good WOT day also. You may just need new seals and have the bearings cleaned and repacked.
Something to chew on.
Personally I think your WOT was a success. If no more than , now you know where you stand on it. I need to have one here myself so badly..

Bryan,it looks like I might be getting a pair of fenders for my wag this weekend,to replace the ones damaged the day of Zack's M&G.I will save the lower corners off the old bent up fenders. If you drive my PC down, bring the fenders with you,and I can replace the rotted off lowers.

I sorta suspected that from the little bit of driving that I did.
The passenger side took the hit from the accident, so I am not surprised.
I need to get one project in and taken care before I start another.
This is why the front clip is off.
After asking here and taking advice given, I decided it would be easier to work on the engine with the front clip off.
With the clip off, I discovered all kinds of rust and other nasty issues.
Now...I've got two projects running at the same time.
I think once I get the engine project completed and before I start to complete the front clip, I'll tackle those ball joints.
It looks to be easier to work on with the clip off.
Personally I think your WOT was a success. If no more than , now you know where you stand on it. I need to have one here myself so badly.. Yes, I think it was also.
I am very happy knowing where I stand.

As prevuously mentioned, the stopping point for the WOT (other than it was getting late)
was that the distributor gear that is matched to the cam gear in the new engine,
would not properly work on the new distributor that Larry had installed the springs and weights.
The hole for the little roll pin would not line up.
Larry, in a posting above, suggested to use the distributor from the engine that we pulled out.
If you are keeping track, that now makes three distributors:
1. The unit that came out of the replacement engine.
2. The newer one that I planned to use.
3. The unit that came out of the engine that we pulled from the J10.
Tonight, I went out, took the distributor gear that is matched to the cam in the new engine to see if would work on the distributor from the old motor.
WoooHooo!! It fits!
