Soot from Exhaust

Just purchased another 89GW, This one is a southern car with NO rust. PO installed Edelbrock performer and Holly 4B with minimum smog equip. GW runs great, will be doing a TFI upgrade, however,noticed that when car is idleing, after reaching operating temp, black /black soot on ground. My immediate reaction is that carb is too rich and should get out vAc gauge and adjust for max. Am I correct of is here something else I'm overlooking.Appreciate your input.

I would think its just MILES AND MILES of deposits working its way out of the piping to be honest. My truck had a brand new motor put in with the old exhaust and it was shooting the black stuff out. Also, the cat breaks apart a little after a few years and comes out in tiny little chunks.
