i'll get pics up this weekend. first i have to get it running. then i can move back into the house. here's my story.

i'm always scouting craigslist for FSJs and parts deals. so i see this ad last month on craigslist for a '81 j10. ok, i've always thought of sportsides as the epitome of FSJs. my inspiration is j10mike's truck and the one in readers rides section from ingo nolting. i called larry and after a few missed connections, saw the truck on monday. larry is a cool guy, he is into old chevys, builds old farm trucks and early chevys frame-up. the j10 was his moms? dads? but got abandoned after a death in the family. it's been unused outside for 10 years. my intention was just to take a look at the truck and see if i could get it really cheap. some people think their dd grand wag is worth 12,000 and some people can't get their transfer case out of neutral and will pay you to tow it away. so i see this truck and the longer i look at it, the more i have to have it. larry said someone in big bear offered him $800 for the rear fenders, someone from denver asked if he could get it to scotty's jeep wrecking(1/4 mile) and scotty would ship it for him. i had a bad feeling that i would regret it forever if i let this one get away. so i made a deal with larry, not far from his listed price, and he dropped it off at my house on wed.
the truck has not been used for 10 years. larry said he didn't want to get it running, wanting the new owner to change fluids, do careful startup procedures to prevent damage. i agree. so here i am. the wife returns from convention tomorrow so i have to get it running in a few days if i can. i pulled the plugs, lubed the cylinders, changed the oil. the crank spins fine. today i plan to put in new plugs and battery cables and see if i can get it to fire. as soon as i can get it going, i'll have time to post pics. if someone wants to post the craigslist ad, it was from fontana, inland empire list. i couldn't get it to load. please feel free to comment on my (foolishness, stupidity, suckiness, gullibility, addiction, etc.) technical suggestions welcomed.

Congratulaions. It's hard to resist the power of the Sportside even if it doesn't have a brow. It's the ultimate chick magnet and neighbor repellant all in one. What engine/trans does it have? Can't wait to see pics.

Drain any old gas. It probably has varnish and rust inside the tank, so before you try firing it up, I'd strongly consider dropping the tank and getting it cleaned out. Also blow out the fuel lines once it's dropped.

Pump the brakes good too and check carefully for system leaks. Wheel cylinders, calipers, etc. might not be too happy after sitting for 10 years Consider doing a full fluid flush there as well.

Trans fluid too...at least drop the pan and get some new fluid mixed in.

I'm jealous. I have no more room to park vehicles and slobber every time I even think about a J truck stepside. My Nissans with FSJ front ends under them will have to suffice.

Technically you should prime the oil pump manually (someone here is selling a priming tool that can be connected to an electric drill)..... set the timing on #1 at TDC, remove distributor... and prime the oil pump w a big flat blade screwdriver, noting how the slot is oriented.... turn the screwdriver clockwise, with an assistant watching the old pressure gauge -igniton on ON, and a good battery connected- the oil pressure should build up pretty fast within 20 seconds.... keep going as the oil pressure switch is at the oil pump output... and you still need to have the oil flow thru the whole oil conduits... probably 2 -3minutes should be enough. Then stop and reposition the oil pump shaft where you started, reinstalled the distributor... and this will be frustrating as it is more likely to be a fishing trip for setting the igntion properly. I am familiar w the 360, but I am sure that the 258 has a similar oiling system.

As for the gas issue, it may be good to push the old stuff away from the pick up line. But adding some dry gas and fresh gas should do it. I have an old project with gas that is now 5 years old and I start it every 4 to 5 months... after adding dry gas and a gallon of fresh gas. It cranks and works well... sort of... May be adding a fuel filter before the fuel pump....

cheers on your find.

i'll try to get pics up today. i have to go to dmv for registration first. last week they had a 2 hour wait for walk ins. i set up a photobucket account, but couldn't get the pics to transfer here. i'm using the img code, right?

anyway, brought the wife home from her trip. had a bad time explaining the situation. "theres something wrong with you". ok i know that. "you're sick". yeahhh.....?

so sunday i spent getting things running. went to drain the tank, it was empty. put in six gallons of fuel. primed the carb and hit the key. spun for awhile and then it caught. took a lot more fuel than i thought it should. after a while the fuel line filled up and i was able to keep it running as long as i wanted. the oil pressure gauge read 30psi. the ammeter read 50 amps so i think i need to do the ammeter bypass soon. while running, it was popping back through the carb rhythmically. so pulled the plug wires until it stopped. #4 was bad. i guess i have a valve stuck open.
i also tried to follow all the vacuum lines. many were gooey and came apart . about 30% were plugged with bolts. the smog pump ran to the place where there should be a manifold but there was no valve and tubes. exhaust manifold had plugs in it. apparently the po had a 'buddy' smog it for him.
the plan now is to drive it down the street 1/4 mile to the storage lot to put it up for a couple months while i finish my current project. then i can bring it home and work on it here. i can pull the head and carb off my '83 to refurb them so that i have everything ready.

I agree...very nice truck.

I bought my J10 from Craigslist and I copied all the pics and saved them.
lycanthrope, I would recommend that you do same, as the ad will get old, expire and those pics will be gone.

BTW...my long term goal is to build my J20 project as a long distance tow rig, so I can come to SoCal and AZ for these rust free projects!
That is if the smog Nazi's don't crush them before I am able to drag back to the midwest!
Then, I will need to set my sites on the herd of 401 powered rigs in Colorado! HAHAHAHAHA!!

I know some of you SoCal folks might think that truck is clapped out, but here in Indiana, I'd be strut'n around like a Banty Roaster!

My advice is to check the soundness of the rear bumper before you hook a trailer to it. They tend to rust where mounted to the frame. Nice truck and good luck with it.

Congrat's on a nice truck. With the exception of the hood, I could get that paint to buff out/shine with a couple hours work.

Glad to see other Sportsides out there. I will be getting pix of
my '82 and '83 stock Sportsides on 'Readers Rigs' very soon.
Question: Does anyone know if those are factory side mirrors
or after market, because my '82 Sportside recent purchase has
the same style mirrors. I was going to change them the the
chrome swingaway factory set up, so any comments please.

yeah it would totally buff out in a weekend, and then maybe put a big eagle on the hood or flat black and it'd look awesome

I bought a pair of mirrors from auto parts store in high school Circa 1985, just like those.

Definately not Jeep

Yeah, that year should have the small GW mirrors.
Every set of large mirrors on any J truck I've ever seen have never been the same style.
