Looking at getting another jeep that the guy says is a 401. Does anybody know how to verify that?

The CID should be cast into the driver's side of the block. The exhaust manifold may be in the way, however. You might have to reach your hand in and "feel" the numbers rather than see them...
If its the original engine you could post the year and I could tell you if 401's were available that year for that model.

Or you could get the vin # and decode it using the vin decoder on the tech pages of this site.

It's the right year to have the 401 but I'll have to go back and see the vin tag to see if it came with it. I'll check for the 401 on the side of the block also.
Thanks for the help! ToddP :D

get under the drivers side look up by the motor mount you can see it with a light. Cast in the block BIG numbers. ;)

might try looking between its legs - works great with puppies anyway... :D

The cast mark is the easiest, but it's not always real pronounced if the block's rusty of oily.

Yeah, mine are right under the motor mounts. To see them, you have to get under the rig with a flashlight and look at the block under the motor mounts. No other way to see the numbers. You can also check the VIN code, the sixth character should be a "Z" for a 401.
