View Full Version : 2150 Carb Info FYI

I thought I would pass on something I found on my 87 GW.

The plastic plate between the carb and the intake manifold on my Wag was cracked so I found a replacement and put it on. All seemed OK but a month or so later the idle got rough so I went looking for the cause. I found the PCV hose had deteriated so I replaced it and while the idle was smoother it still should be better. I started hunting for vacuum leaks with the carb spray and found vacuum leaking around the carb base plate. I pulled the carb and everything "looked" OK. Further inspection found that the plastic base plate did not seal on the manifold and that the parts of the plate that go over the carb mounting studs hit the intake manifold before the sealing area for the carb venturis. The base of the carb and the intake manifold both checked out as being flat so I used a plate of glass and some sand paper to sand off the high spots on the spacer so that the venturi area would seal.
The plastic spacer was a stock Jeep item and did not appear to have been modified previously.

Hope this may help someone else who has a 2150 carb and is chasing vacuum gremlins.

I too had a cracked spacer. I replaced it with a new one from the dealer and put it on. when I tightened it down the ends that fit over the studs cracked again. so I am with you that something is wrong with the height around the studs. when you filed the spacer did it solve your idle problems?

When I changed my carb gasket, I found that one of the arms that fits over the studs was broken as well. Since I was pressed for time, I went ahead and re-used it anyway. I'm not sure that it really matters because the carb picks up the studs as well. As long as the spacer is flat where it needs to be and has good surface contact on the carb, it should be ok. It's interesting that they only use one gasket.

Mine is missing one of the "arms" too but I reused it. instead of the thick paper thing that came in the carb kit.. seems like this would be a good thing to make from metal eh?? or would there be leaks cause by that piece expanding and contracting from the heat??..

These dang restricter plate FSJ races is killing me.. I like old days when we could run full out ..

Ok sorry, too much daytona practice lately..

Fords have a plastic spacer that will work instead and its only 3 bucks at the pick a part. Thats what I installed on mine before I went 4bbl. I'll post a picture of one when I go to pick a part again.

Chris - idles smooth as silk (for now)but note that because the part of the spacer plate that goes under the power valve cover is lower that the bottom of the part of the plate that contacts the manifold at the stud you can only really sand off 3 of the ears on the spacer plate at a time. I suppose you could get 2 of the paper gaskets the go between the spacer and the manifold and cut the ears of the gasket that go over the studs off of one of them and then glue the two gaskets together so you would have a double gasket thickness at the venturi sealing area but only single gasket thickness at the stud but after seeing how easily the spacer plate broke I wasn't willing to try that theory out.

Clarkston - One gasket?? should have a thin paper gasket between manifold and spacer and that think ol chuck of recycled material between spacer and carb.
When I changed my carb gasket, I found that one of the arms that fits over the studs was broken as well. Since I was pressed for time, I went ahead and re-used it anyway.
I did the same when I originally rebuilt the carb. After a couple months the idle went south and it started to run kinda screwy. When I pulled the carb I found the spacer plate was cracked right down one of the venturis - slight vacuum leak!?! That is when I replaced it with a spacer plate from the boneyard (stock Jeep) and a while goes by again and then I found the situation described in the original post.

ClarkG - the thick paper thing goes between the spacer plate and the carb. Be careful though because this "gasket" is what broke off one of the ears of the spacer plate (part that goes over the stud) in the first place - it fit in too tight between the "ears" of the plate and I was in too much of a hurry to get the thing back together so I did not spend enough time trimming the "gasket" and figured that the gasket would squeeze between the ears of the spacer plate. It certainly did but the spacer plate is what gave - not the gasket.

I need to take a closer look at this thing this weekend. I only remember the thin paper gasket between the spacer and the manifold which I replaced. I thought it was strange that they would use a gasket on one side of the spacer and not on the other. Its definitely running better than before.
