View Full Version : Too many projects. Anyone else have this problem?

I have too many projects for SlushPuppy at the moment. It's a weird feeling, actually.
I have to replace my external TBI pump with an in-tank fuel pump since the external one was getting starved for fuel on my last 4 wheeling trip.
I have to install my Hi-Lift holder on my roof rack since I discovered that there's no other good way of storing it. (60" model doesn't fit well inside the cab)
I have to install my EZ Lockers in my diffs. These are the ones I got on the BJ's Offroad special purchase.
Maybe by next spring when the trails open up again, I'll have the truck ready once more.
Anyone else have a bunch of project that they don't have time for?

You wheel that thing? :hide:
Hmm..only thing worse is having 4 Fsjs with their individual build needs. at least one is ready to rock when there's gas for the tank..

i know just how you feel...start adding other hobbies in the mix too. Got the wheels off my bike, taking them on my lunch break tomorrow to get new tires mounted and balanced. Got a full width HP dana 44 that needs re-done and stuck under my TJ, then find a Dana 60 and stick it under the rear. Want to put new carpet in the waggy along with a new stereo and seats from a commander, but first i need a blower motor, thermostat, and rear shaft u-joints. need to find time to take the body off the gladiator and sandblast the frame, all this while working on the ZJ that my girlfriend puts a zillion miles on, and trying to save up money to buy a new quad since mine took a crap. All in due time I guess.
Sorry I'm ranting....
Anyone else have a bunch of project that they don't have time for? We were just discussing this exact same thought at the IFSJA Board meeting last week.
...at the midway point we took a break.
When we came back from break, everyone was either tired or cranky and we voted to go home until January.
Anyway, I just wanted folks to know we did think about it, not a lot but we did, pretty sure it happened that way.

To many fun things and to little time. Continuing wag project, restoring my HighBoy, getting the little 87Pathy going for the kids, a patio room project, a chicken coop, lots of carpentry projects, and general ranch management issues, as well as work. Throw in church service, hunting, fishing, and the occasional surf trip. No wonder I can't find time to play music. :D Good thing fall is around the corner, everything wakes up here when the temps get below the 100's.

yup, only i had too many projects on 5 different jeeps, started to need the room, didnt have time to finish them all, so started selling them slowly, out of the 3 GWs 2 MJs and tj, im down to one mj and my tj, Im pretty sure i just sold my last GW to a local, whos going to finish restoring it, which makes me fsjless when he picks it up, but not too worry, there will be another fsj in the near future,

Amen to that! I just sold my Jeepster, am trying to sell my 53 Ford. I want to have just what I really want to keep. The Waggy 350TBI swap is a day or two away from being done, the Scrambler LSX is another story. Maybe by Christmas. I've spent the last 5 years working on Jeeps instead of wheeling them...next summer will be different.

ooooooh yes!
- install 3" Rough Country lift springs and new shocks
- complete Dana20 swap in place of QT
- swap in new, interesting bucket seats
- axle swap
- SOA conversion with hi-steer
- rebuild/modify 360
The list goes on......

Are we counting vehicles as projects, or are we counting the various things that need done on each vehicle as projects? I hope the former because I couldn't hope to count the latter.
1 68 gladiator in the middle of a frame off.
1 80 J10/20/30ish in the middle of a engine swap, cab repair, general refresh.
1 78 J20 getting stripped down to tubish buggy trail only duty.
1 79 CJ7 alllllmost done with a complete frame off. (Getting sold)
1 78 CJ5 about 75% through a frame off. (Getting sold)
1 83 CJ7 (my baby) being stripped down for a frame off and Mustang HO 5.0 swap.
1 66 Radiobox Unimog stripped for a new engine install, frame/cab refresh and box rebuild.
1 house 90% through a remodel ( I am SO sick of this one) so I can sell it.
1 house with pond and 10 acres of way too much crap landscaping wise that needs constant maintenance that I'm in the process of simplifying.
1 foreign born wife whose english I'm trying to improve, 2 kids under 4 yrs old, 1 adorable but girly-man dog that's afraid of dang near everything.
Bits and pieces. Man just typing it makes me tired. :banghead:

I've spent the last 5 years working on Jeeps instead of wheeling them...next summer will be different.
Been thinking that about my Scrambler, now I am selling it so someone else can wheel it.
It is not the vehical projects that kill me it is the house projects, I still have 1 room that needs texture and paint, been sitting for 6 months, I remodeled my kitchen 1-1/2 years ago and the counters still are not screwed down and no trim up, heck put new windows in over the last 2 years and half of them don't have trim yet - notice I hate finish work?
Resided the house this spring, still needs shutters put up... I am going to stop now, I don't want to see the entire list.

Too many things to do.....too little time.
Short list on the Honcho is to fab up new front lower shock mounts. I've been riding around with one broken for God knows how long.
Next I am finally installing my winch this weekend. I bought lots of steel, have lots of 6013's, and all my tools at work.
Lastly is to re-test drive my bead balanced swampers and hope they are better than the last test drive.
Next is my 66 Mustang. I have 95% of the parts I need and 0% of the time I need. It's going to be a winter project as I finally have it out of the elements and inside a garage that I can heat up.

Ugh. Thanks, guys. You reminded me off all the OTHER projects I have to finish, too.
I have to move the rest of my arcade games upstairs and clean out the garage bay so they can actually be played, instead of just stored. I also have two project games that I have to repair.
And the usual house maintenance stuff.
Good to see that misery loves company, however. :D

I looked around and said I can't afford all this. I started scrapping the ones with the serious cancer. To bad metal is only 50.00 a ton these days. But now I have room to pour a slab and not have to roll around in the dirt. I probbably have enough project to keep me busy well into after the dirt nap.:D

Lets see where to start, gotta regear the front axle, get driveshafts lengthened, mount the XJ tank, wire the engine and PCM, finish the fuel plumbing, design and build a center console, put the door panels back on after verifying the switches all work, redo the headliner and over head console etc, etc, etc..........

I have more project vehicles than motivation, but something is getting done to one of them at all times, so maybe I'll eventually get to the point where more than 4 out of 7 are running. Maybe.

I make a fix list in order, for each vehicle.
To further complicate things, make a "sub list" of while this is apart...fix this also.
List contains parts needed, which ones already have.
It gets overwhelming (with life demands) without a good list.

Just gotta focus on what's important. I pretty much ignore my DD FSJ, because it works. Been focusing on the 68 J3K, stalled on 3/4 ton driveline (need CJ perches for the front HD44 and waiting on a trade for the rear D60)..after that its install the tank, finishing the wiring and vac, slap a fender on and ready to rock! (windshield too).
There was a great editorial in Ol Skool Rodz a few issues back about doing the 'free' stuff when you're flat out of cash. It's so true, why save it for last when you can gititdun off the bat.

Yeah, those house projects can put a dent in your "shop time". I haven't put more than a few hours in on either Jeep in the last few weeks because of house crap. Too bad they don't make condos or townhomes with huge garages, and no close neighbors...
Selling the Scrambler, huh? Do tell...

My life is a project.
For vehicles:
Going tomorrow to look at a new motor for the J-10. Tired of messing with the old one and I can get this running/driving one for $200. Also needs shocks once the motor is done to be driveable on the street then a front d-shaft to be trailable. not to mention a cage etc so I can do hard stuff (and feel a little safer anyway).
My TJ is my albatross. I traded two other rigs for it and that was a huge mistake as I have put more time and money into it than the other 2 needed. I love having the top off and my kids do too. But if I could find someone close enough to home with a nice J truck or cherokee I'd work out a deal. It runs great (my wife drives it to work) and is very capable off road...it just doesn't feel quite right to me. I truly want another FSJ and for 'topless' driving would like to find a YJ or a non-7 CJ later on. Frankly as much as I like the top off it's not in any way needed by me.
My 416 trailer is a wonderful thing. But it needs tires...I have to put air in one every time I use it. Plus I want to do a tub off partial restore.
My wife's pathfinder has big time jeep rash. It hit my TJ and was hit by my MJ. No damage to the jeeps but the pathfinder looks bad.
Home:
I am in the process of building a new pen for our 3 pet goats and our pot belly pig who is lame on one back leg.
We turned our 'extra' room into a 4th bedroom for our 6 year old and still have yet to put a door on (thankfully he says he doesn't want one but I knwo it will have to happen soon).
Hmmm...that's just on my to do list for today.
LOL:eek:

over the last 9 years of FSJ projects, I've come to a few conclusions:
1. the time you spend constantly working on the rig can't be retrieved
2. time you lose wrenching out of necessity is gone
3. missing time with family to constantly wrench is not worth it
4. the money you "save" by cobbling together is eventually more expensive than just buying the right part the first time
5. it's FAR better to have one running / driving FSJ, than to have 2/3/4 or more that all need work at the same time

Wow, you guys....I have like 100 bikes in yard. I know that some of them will get rusted by snow if they are not moved indoor or into tarp.
My 1977 Wagoneer has tailgate window stuck down. Need to get that up for winter.
Also want to look into getting antique plates for Wagoneer if possible.
Oh yeah, I have a Rottweiler, a Mutt and also my wonderful girlfriend that wants attention.
One too many projects is not worth it for me.
