View Full Version : 1973 J-4000 Quadtrac Questions....

I just bought (well dad used my money and bought it since I'm in Iraq working right now) a 1973 J-4000 Quadratrac for an insanely cheap price, everything is factory, 360/auto (dont know if its a 400 or 727, I've got conflicting reports on this), He didnt tell me the mileage, dosent really matter......It needs a little steel work done but nothing my body guy cant take care of at his shop......So I got a few questions......

What type of fluid does the T-case and axles take, something special with friction modifiers or just plain ole 80-90 (which I doubt), cause all of the fluids are needing changed badly.......Also what is the best grease to use on the front closed knuckle 44, I plan to rebuild it since the rebuild kit is fairly cheap from BJ's?? I was thinking about using some short strand corn head grease like I use on farm equipment.......

I got a 440/727 combo with 125K miles in my 1977 Sportsman motor home, how hard would it be to slip the 440 down in it, I would convert the tranny over to 4x4 BUT would it bolt to the factory BW t-case, cause me and dad talked about building an aluminum headed 500+ inch fire breather for this thing for a little rumble, I also have a EFI 318/42RH Auto from a 1993 Dakota complete, how would that work as a swap.......I wish I could step up to 1 tons without moving the front hangers under the frame, are their any other bigger axles that will work under it without moving the hangers......

I am going for a vintage look on the outside, so 33-35 inch tires max with about a 4 inch lift, does anyone know where I can get a set of wide bias ply "old school" style mud tires, I know Power King has 2 different styles of 9.00x16's but I was wondering if anyone offered a 12.00x15 possibly.......

The biggest thing I really want to know is if the 440 will fit......I dont play with jeeps that much other than my buddies TJ Crawler on full size axles......I'm a big three full size truck guy mostly......

Welcome and thank you for your service!

There is good info on QuadraTracs over here:
http://jubileejeeps.org/quadratrac
The TCL1 fluid from BJs is a popular source of QT lube. Sometimes you get lucky and find good deal on Mopar or AMC QT fluid over on eBay.

This is a first year QuadraTrac Jeep. The low range would be shifted with a push pull cable setup if it is still original. The tranny is a T400.

The 440 will be tight back by the heater box and brake booster but is doable.

I just work over here, I'm not a soldier.....Yes it still has the original push/pull cable on the dash and thank you for the tranny info......The price of the lube isnt bad, but the shipping is killer, shipping was almost what the cost was......How would I go about adapting the chrysler tranny to the BW case.....

I think you are really trying to put a square peg in the round hole if you want to swap in the 440. There's no easy way to go about it ... wither you go to a different transfer case and keep the TF727, or ... I don't think there's anyone that makes an adapter from the 440 to a TH400.

If you owned a 1980 or newer truck, it would come with the A727 (a TF727 with the AMC engine pattern). Then you could take the tail shaft out of the A727, put it in to your TF727, and bolt the combo to the existing transfer case.

About the only way to do this ... other than swapping the whole drivetrain from a 1980 or later truck (axles included! drop changes to driver's side in 1980), is to find a Dodge NP208 transfer case mated to a TF727 and use the whole setup or swap the Dodge tailshaft and adapter and transfer case onto your TF727. You may also have some interference with the body - I think the floor panels also change to accommodate the A727.

If you want big cubic inches, there are other engines that are easier. The Cadillac 472 and 500, for example, is very compact for its displacement and can be adapted to your TH400 using junkyard parts. The AMC 401 is a popular swap, and can make a lot of power. Just FYI.

I already got the 440, that is why I was thinking about using it......Not really worth it to build another complete engine.......I will just rebuild the 360 to a little better than stock and leave it at that.......

I would be in favor of fixing up the 360 or finding a 401. I have a 72 J4000 Camper Special long term project. I have found the 401 in a 76 Cherokee. Then I find out the nailhead T400 and adapter ring configuration used on the early 360s never supported a 401 balance on the flex plate. My direction is gonna be stick the T400 with the 401 in it. Still debating on QT or D20. There is still a fair amount of aftermarket support for the Quadratrac. The MM PT kit saves a lot of them. So, if you don't mind, when there is time - tell us if yours has the adapter on nailhead T400 or AMC style bell pattern for reference?

Now, if I had a 440/727, I'd be thinking about a Dodge Dart kind of project for it. Or even odder yet, early Rambler American econobox on bull juice.

I have a 77 D350 extended cab dodge dually with a 440/727 in it right now......Me and dad are going to restore that truck after the jeep, It has 80,XXX miles on it with factory working cruise and A/C......I may just keep the motorhome and fix some of its little problems and use it to tow with also......once he starts the tear down on the jeep this week I will report back with what he finds on the engine......me and him talked about it and we are just going to rebuild the 360 IF we cant get a 401 to work in it......either way it will be a fairly stock rebuild, there will be no headers, high rise intake or shiny chrome crap, it will crowd up the engine bay and make it look tacky......

I found my tires also.....I couldnt believe I found these, I am trying to contact them right now about a dealer close to me in florida.....I am getting the Trailbreakers in 1200R15 or 35x14.50x15.........

Sounds like a plan.

Curious, I have not been able to find a bigger picture of those tires. What kind of price are you finding on them?

I havent been able to find a dealer yet, I am sure they wont be cheap but I can't find another company that makes anything besides Power King and those are 9.00's, I ran a set of 30 year old 33x12.50x16.5's identical to these for about 8 months on the rear of my 95 4x4 V10 dodge ram and they was the best tires I ever owned, they were weather checked but held air better than any radial I've ever had and I could go just about as many places in 2wd as I could in 4wd when I had my BFG MT's.....They outlasted the other tires I had on the front of my dodge.....Plus I am going for an old school look and these will be perfect......

The truck has the adapter plate on the block.....

Dad started the tear down already, she is going to need some work, driver side floor pan, some roof work, and some door post work.......Still nothing that can't be fixed.......I am still trying to get him to take some pics......

Explanation of the quadra tracs...
http://jubileejeeps.org/quadratrac/index.htm

For the tcase fluid you can either order from bjs or buy "non" detergent straight 30w motor oil and 8oz of an LSD friction modifier concentrate.

Add the LSD to the reduction unit first, top off with 30w and then fill the tcase with 30w. You have to drive in a figure 8 pattern for about 10 mins to mix it but it might be cheaper for you instead of paying shipping.
