Well lets just say my "Jeep RUNS well now". It was my first time ever painting a car so all you purest out there im sorry it had to be on a Wagoneer. But I must say I trully enjoyed it and can't wait to do the inside tomorrow. I do have a lot of runs but what can I ecpect for my first time. I would do it again in a second.

So should I let it dry for a few days then sand them out or can I sand them tomorrow and respray since I have a whole nother gallon of paint?

what type of paint did you use? is it a base coat clearcoat system, or a 1 stage enamel, or even laquer? if it is a 1 part system which i am assuming it is, then you dont need to respray. wet sand the runs out with 1500 then sand them again with 2500 or 3000. after that buff it all shinny with some good rubbing compound. as far as how long to wait it should say somthing on the paint cans. but as long as the tempature is around 70 or higher you should be good in 24 hours.

Protect yourself with a better 'paint respirator' next time...
Otherwise it's looking good. Always a great feeling to get her done, it's that initial prep work that always drove me nuts..

go along and take a razor blade to the runs. You wont get then with sanding you'll end up sanding all the paint except the run. Take a razor blade and hold it at about a 60-80 degree angle down then drag it down acoss the run. it should shave it down. Once you get the runs off. you can either now wetsand or make another coat depending on your paint type.

It would be a miracle to see my GW in one single, shiny color. :o

Woohoo! Shiny!
Yep, that's a dust mask. Won't keep out the solvent, much less the CYANIDE in automobile paint. Catalyzed automobile paint can mess you up ... pros wear a full body suit with a pressurized mask.

Yeah I should have spurged for the $20 can mask. I had to take a few breathers outside. Lesson learned though. Im painting the inside today and going to get a better mask for that.

Take an old flat file and break about an inch section off. Use it to gently file the runs in the heaviest spots. Do not try to take the run down level with the file! Next, use a flat wooden paint paddle and some 600 grit sand paper to gently work the entire area of the run. Work a section about 8-10 inches around the run to keep from 'Dimpling" the paint surface. Be very careful on corners since they are very easy to cut trhu in these areas.
White is a hard color to spray even for the pros because it's hard to see a reflection while spraying. Give yourself a big pat on the back for doing it yourself and with a little work it will be just fine.

Thank you all for the advise and kind words. Although it may not be a professional job i sure have enjoyed it. I painted the inside Sunday and boy what a difference. Wish I could switch them around. /the good thing about the outside runs, is that they are in places that Chrome or Wood Grain will be going and only a couple in noticable areas. I took the advice from you all and wore a resporator Sunday and BOY I could paint all day in that thing.
I will post up pics tomorrow. I am pulling DORM DUTY tonight baby sitting 600 Airman.

Just curious, You said you had a quote from MAACO for around 2500 in a previous post. So how much do you think you came out on top with buying the paint/sprayer/respirator and all?
Thanks.
oh did you do most of the primer with a rattle can?

The MAACO quote was another guys thread, I was just showing him how someone who had never painted before could do it. I got a quote from a place here at $3500 with me taking the wood off. After I brushed my teeth to get the trow up smell gone I went on a quest to learn how to do it my self. I spent roughly $350 on paint, sand paper, primmer, tape, cover paper, and other supplies. My buddy had the shop and paint gun. The gun was a $50 from Harbor Freight. Like I said its not the best job but its done and didn't cost me a fortune. BTW yes the primmer was Duplicolor Self Etching on the bare metal and then a combination of Duplicolor and Rustoleum High build. The rest was just cut and sanded.

:DI realizesd the MAACO thing as soon as I posted last night:D. My mistake, sorry bout that.
But thank you, for the information. I'm about to start my first body work job, i've got someone I might be able to get help spraying it from, but I'd like to do all the prep stuff my self, so i'm off to get rattle cans and papers today!

That looks a lot like my color. . . I used the absolute whitest white I could get. Just sit in it and look out into the sun. The hood is bright and blinding, especially in this FL sun. Might think about putting something on the raised portion of the hood, it's enough on mine to keep me from squinting.

his is why they used flat black on hoods back in the 70s, of course it also looked cool
