I have an '89 GW with rebuilt 360, new plugs, wires, etc...new everything pretty much. I recently rebuilt the carb (stock 2150) since it had sat for a while during engine rebuilt. When I try to start it when cold I have to pump the gas 5-6 times and usually crank it 2-3 times to get it started. Once I get it gets warmed up it drives fine. I've made all the carb adjustments to specs and can't figure out what it is. When I press the pedal to the floor when cold the choke valve does not close. Could I have something in the choke linkage hooked up wrong or what? Also, wants to stall when accelerating when I have the EGR vacuum hose hooked up at the carb. When I disconnect the hose it runs fine. Could this be the egr? I'm fairly new at this so any help would be great

I can't answer your questions,me being an idiot when it comes to working on Jeeps.I love em but am just learning as I go along.I just wanted to say it's good to see someone else from Greensboro on here.

In the line going to the EGR from the PORTED vac on the carb, there should be a one way check valve inline. These valves are like a delays (from what I am told and come in different colors. I have a purple and black one. This one I have delays the vac source to the EGR until ~1800rpms~

If you stumble right off the bat, you may have too much vac at the EGR.

I'm just now messing with RBY's W/T for smog and othere members may be able to enlighten you better on this, but so far... this is what I know....

On the choke... check to make sure the heat tubes on the choke are not clogged.

Also... it is important to remember.. IT IS BEST to adjust a choke when the engine is cold.

With a cold motor, pop the air cleaner off.

look at the choke... now open the throttle slowely.

There is a choke cam with 'steps' in it on the driver's side of the carb that is adjustable with a sprung screw... if this is set too low, the choke may not operate correctly, and if set too high (not your problem here) it will idle SUPER high until you rap the throttle.

It only takes one depression of the throttle to engage the choke cam when cold.... but we all know that we have to pump gas on a cold startup....some don't... and in the mornings, if you don't pump it at least once, the choke step will not be set becuase that last time it was touched was the night before and was warm...

Sounds like a choke problem for one if the top butterfly is not shutting all the way when you depress the petal once when cold. Adjust the choke and try again, also check the heat riser tubes like RB said. I had a problem once after rebuilding a carb that took me a couple of day to figure out.
I rebuilt he carb set the choke, and fired up and ran fine the next morning. Parking it that night, went out second morning and couldn't get the beast to start and it had been running great. Checked fuel, yep getting fuel, got spark, hmmmmm. Ether and still nothing, didn't have time to mess with it so took different vehicle to work. Came home that night and same thing??? Pulled carb top, needle/seat working fine, fuel in carb?? Reassemble and notice choke open! Give chock a twist and then I notice the can for the bi-metalic coil turns freely!!! The three little ears that hold it in place had finally flattened out enough from years of loosening and tighting that when the coil heated up the first day and opened the carb and then cooled off it twisted the choke out of adjustment. Needle nose, little bend on each ear and good ever since.

Sorry for so long.

RB also the ported vaccuum off the carb (provided he is using the ported vaccuum) should open the EGR properly. The delay valve (if I understand them correctly) is just that a delay to slow the opening of the EGR so as to not cause a stumble by it opening too quickly. The delay valve itself should not significantly affect the rpm that the egr opens at, but the I could be full of it tongue.gif

I'd start with these things and see what ya got then.
