Okay...I know next to nothing about electrical work, so please bear with me. I'm doing the old bypass the ammeter thing, turns out that my truck has had two fires (or melting incidents) before, looks like one under the dash and the other in the engine compartment in the 10 gauge wire about 6" from the starter relay. Under the dash at the ammeter, the yellow wire and red wire are both melted down...I have a few questions -
1) I am going to run an 8 gauge wire from the alternator to the starter relay - on another post, I read that 14 gauge fusible link wire should be used. Can I set this up with a few inches of the 14 gauge coming directly off the alternator post and then connecting to the 8 gauge wire? How does this work?
2) I am going to be re-running the 10 gauge yellow wire all the way from the back of the ammeter to the starter relay...but I notice it makes a brief stop at some large box on the firewall (not the fuse panel)... how the heck do I get the old wire out of there, or can I just run this new wire through the hole in the firewall? Also, the 10 gauge replacement wire I bought from Kragen looks a little smaller on the insulation than the original Jeep 10 gauge wire...what's up with that?
3) That **** red wire that is originally hooked up to the alternator....I hear it comes from the big splice? If I cut it out as close to the big splice as possible, will I be okay? The part of the red wire from the ammeter seems to be burned almost all the way down to the big splice...how do I go about remedying that? Just replace it and splice it in with new 10 gauge wire? And should I leave both terminals connected to one post on the ammeter, or should I connect the wires together, or should I just run the 10 gauge yellow wire directly to where the red wire hooks up to the big splice??
-phew- If you are still reading after all this, I thank you for your help!!!! -sigh-
