I've been visiting this site for a couple of months now and am a recent purchaser of an 88 GW. There seems to be a steady mention of parts that will soon be unavailable on this forum. I'm curious about which parts make sense to collect even when they are not actually needed right now.

I'm not talking about hoarding or spending a bunch of cash in case the sky falls. But when the occasional FSJ shows up in the wrecking yard of parts vehicle section of the classifieds what should the typical GW owner snag. Small electrical parts seem to make sense to me such as switches etc.

Is there a way to find out what most Dealer parts stores stock or can order without being a pain in the Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley to the guy behind the counter?

What would you likely choose to pick up?

Tailgate paddle switches! Also gauges, any good weatherstripping, tailgate safety switches, pwr window locks, seats, headliners, a couple of good pieces of floorboard, any interior trim pieces...you get the idea.

Anything that is still there and is not ruined..

Rear glass if you break yours or break it during a repair someday.. nice to have spares.

Gas tank skid plate if its solid will always have a use for someone.

I wouldnt mind a slice off the rear lower quarter panel for my GW the only place rusted thru cause of the PO leavin rags in the jack storage area.. would love to cut off a hunk and weld the same shaped hunk back on heheh

Definaly. the door armrest's that are always cracked and the middle armrest piece..

anytime there are good clean inner trim pieces, door panels, headliner ect.. someone needs those.. heheh..

JC Whitney has them. That was the first parts I ordered after purchasing my GW. They fit pretty good too!

I just purchased from Goodmark (e-bay) a set of lower quarter panels (less than $ 30.00). They are about 9" in height. Instead of welding these on, I flanged the panel on the truck and pop riveted the replacement panels in place using seam sealer for an additional bond. Used aluminum pop rivets, counter sank and sanded them down flush with 36 grit disk. Used bondo to finish it all off. Some work was needed on the inner fenders. Iused 22 gauge galvized steel and shaped these to fit. Sealed with seam sealer, bondo, primer, that topped it off with rubberized undercoating (water tight I hope)

I have one side completely done and the other side was just riveted on this past weekend. If you want pictures, I have them.

It's an ok job........but time consuming.

i'm a firm believer in parts vehicles. the stuff you strip from a car hardly ever gets used, unless the need already exists. parts cars are great for dealing with unforeseen situations and the odd piece that is unique, interior trim pieces door parts etc. another thing a parts car provides is a tutorial on the replacement procedure.
