Ok...so just got my wag a month ago (87 with np229) and I'm fairly new to the whole deal. New motor..just picked up yesterday smile.gif and now trying to get into 4wd. I checked vacuum and no leaks but the lever doesn't budge when switched..tested switch and is ok. I removed the linkage that goes to the vac motor (right side front) and tried to move the lever with a vice grips to no avail. There still is another linkage hooked up to the shaft...how do you remove this and could this be stopping me from turning the shaft. I would rather have the thing in 4wd all the time then none. Could my transfer case be shot? Any help would greatly be appreciated........

Well I have seen the shaft sieze up on more than one ocassion. I would spray the shaft with PB Blaster every day or so where it goes into the case. Does the Vac Motor work? If you are trying to engage the 4 wheeldrive while under the rig, that may be impossible unless the gears are in position to mesh. You could jack it up so as you can have someone turn the front wheel while trying to work the linkage arm that the Vac motor hooks to, that is your 4 Wheel drive. The Low range will not move untill it is in 4 wheel drive.

I'm in Iron Mountain Michigan right now..warming up and ready to get out and try to get that thing in 4wd..I live in Neenah. I've read on this forum that quite a few guys engage the 4wd manually on the 229. I have vac down to the tranny..just nothing moves when you apply it.
