Hey all, just joined this forum and man is it a sweet resource for a newbie like me who has only mucked around with toyotas!. I recently picked up a 86 GW with 300 something on the odo but a rebuilt engine and soild running gear for 300 bucks. (300 Canadain bucks no less, lol)

My question is, the motor was leaking oil, exhuast gas, and other important things, so the top end is getting a gasket set at the very least before i drive it. I was also thinking of putting Edelbrock shorty headers and a perfromer intake on while its apart, what kind of carb should i top it off with?

Im out in the sticks and this is a bush beater, so emissions arnt really a concern, what kind of HP can i expect with this setup?

Cheers!

Welcome From Charlotte, NC. I also mucked with FJ40's, this is why I went Jeep. You will find this group is incredibly useful and friendly...Good start focusin on the mechanics, I'm trying to do the same but just can't resist tinkering with everything else.

Pass on the headers. The stock manifolds are supposed to do really well. Everyone I hear with headers has to go through extraordinary measures to prevent leaks.

remflex gaskets with the headers usually work great. Cheap headers I hear are more troublesome!

Welcome from SW Colorado!

We are running Hedman headers on 2 401s here and they seal pretty good with Remflex or Mr Gasket Copper gaskets. Stock exhaust manifolds flow pretty good too.

I would consider a Holley Truck Avenger carb if I were you. Edelbrock is a bit over sold IMHO.

So just stick with an intake an pass on the headers? I already pulled em off cause they were leaking pretty bad, if I put them back on, can I somehow delete the butterfly valve thing on the pass. side? It looks very restrictive and just another place to leak.

Heres some pics of it so far. I cut all the rust out and patched it, but the dents are staying, cause' theres going to be more...lol

Not bad for 10 cans of rattle paint...

Cool looking ride! I live in victoria bc, welcome to the board. Where abouts are you?

I ran the stock manifolds for years then went headers a year ago and havent had any leaks so far. Definately noticeable performance gains on my motor but my motor isnt quite stock. Keep the pics coming:drivin:
