Engine swap??

My fiancee is planning to replace the AMC engine in his '79 Wagoneer with a Buick 350 from a '71 Skylark. (He doesn't have internet access at work so he asked me to post for him) Does the turbo 400 in the '79 have the B-O-P bolt pattern or will some sort of adapter be necessary? How about motor mounts as well? Does he just need to purchase motor mounts for a '70 Jeep or will more modifications be necessary? Any other tips would be welcome as well. Thanks!

This swap is not impossible, but there is going to be some issues.
Transmision in the 79 will not bolt up, nor are there any adaptors to adapt it. The transmission in the 79 is an AMC bolt patern. The Frame towers for the motormounts will have to be made, then the stock motormount on the 350 will work fine.
Back to the transmission, I have a Good TH400 from the Pre AMC cased TH400 with the BOP adaptor, that was used in Jeep, for sale. Though it was setup for the Dana 20 transfercase, so to use it in the 79 with the Q-Trac the tailshaft would need to be swapped, or switch to Dana 20 T-Case.
Other issues would be wirring, radiator, exaust. Be a nice swap though smile.gif

Can he instead use the TH-350 transmission that is currently attached to the engine or will that create a problem with bolting to the transfer case?

He can not use the TH350, the tailshaft is not the same. The adaptor between the Q-trac and Trans will not work. You have to have a TH400 as the TH400 mated to the Q-Trac uses a one of a kind shaft and is not interchangable with a TH350. Your options are use a setup like I have, or find a BOP patern TH400, or find a TH350 output shaft to match a Chevy NP 208 or NP203 or NP205 and use that set up. That would require many mods. Simplest and cheapest, would be to swap the tail shaft from your TH400 into one like mine or a BOP Paterned TH400.

Thanks for all of your input, it's been very valuable. I'm learning quickly but I still have a couple of questions. Would any Buick TH400 work for this swap? Or are there still transfer case adaptation problems? Crazy_Jeepman, how much do you want for the Jeep TH400 you have for sale? Thanks!
