I've had my stock 87 GW for about 5 months. It has 55k on the clock. I recognize this type vehicle has a stiff suspension but it seems like the rear suspension is stiffer than I expected though I don't have experience with other GW rides.

The vehicle sits well (doesn't sag) so I was wondering if it is normal that the rear end takes bumps pretty hard. I don't have any bounce so I think the shocks are good, just seems to be a harsh ride...much moreso than my F150. My tires are new and not off road type. Any thoughts or is this just normal...not a complaint, just an inquiry. Thanks

You sure you don't have air shocks or some other extra springs?

The factory-equipped Wagoneers I've driven have been very smooth.

I don't have air shocks. Possible the leafs could be beefed up. How many layers in a rear spring is stock?

The helper springs are usually thicker then the stock leafs and are put between the axle and leaf pack.

It might also have an AAL or been resprung...

On every Grand Wag I have been in, the rear seems to be smoother than the front. Your rear springs should have four leafs per spring.

my 84 has four leaf springs, but i recently parted out an 87 that had seven leaf springs. i thought it must have been part of a factory towing package or something, as the 87 also had an auxiliary transmission cooler. i would imagine it might be stiffer with the extra springs.

My '89 has 7 in the front, 5 in the back. It has a towing package, VERY stiff and you can feel every bump. Front definitely seems stiffer.

checked and I have 5 leafs in the rear. If I push down on the bumper i'm lucky if I can get 1 1/2" of play....sounds like it has been beefed up.
