SOA with the GM axles make the job a whole lot eazier.... mostly a bolt on application....
new brakelines and steering parts are the most common parts needes other than shocks.
The GM axles are quite a bit w i d e r than the FSJ axles so that is something else to figure in... how much tire will be OUTSIDE the wheelwells.
If you have a W/T it's not that bad.. the N/T are like 6-8" skinnier! 4" on the W/T

Uh Oh, It sounds like Mike is getting ready to drop that 454 and drivetrain from his Burb in to his W/T Chero. :D

For the axles I believe dodge axles are pretty close in width to W/T axles, at least J-truck axles. Those are also suppose to be pretty much a bolt on with just steering and break lines needed. Also already SOA and have pass. drop if you get something from the '70s.

it wood be cheaper/faster to just weld nu spring pads on ur axles. that way u dont have to find a way to get rid of them when u buy a GM axle.
if ur P side knuckle is of the flat top design. www.partsmike.com (http://www.partsmike.com) can machine it for studs, provide a steering arm and a custom draglink.
the concern with the GM axle is that not all front GM axles are d44s. around 77 and later, GM installed 10bolt front diffs. much lighter in all respects than d44s.
if u have ready access to a GM front d44 and can dispose of the OE jeep d44, then u need to have the P side knuckle machined and an steering arm installed and a draglink constructed.

10 bolt is every bit as good as a 44. i would even go so far as to say the 10 blt is alittler bit stronger. axlehousings are very comparable, axlesahfts close enuff(same diameter, with 2 less splines) for govt purposes ;) ring gear same size, and the pinion is actually bigger. both use the 297x wheeljoint. everything from the knuckle out is the same.
another big plus for the 10 bolt is the fact that parts are easy to find. chevy 44s were only used till 77 in chevy trucks, and til 79 in GMC trucks,so spare sahfts are getting alittle harder to find. i think you be better putting perches on your stock axles if you want to stick with a 44. jeep 44 axles are quite a bit more common than chevy 44s. 10 bolts were used up front of millions of chevy/GMC trucks from 79 to 90 or 91 and are a dime a dozen.
last and not least, the selection of used gears and lockers is great, since lots of cars used the same 28 spline diff in the rear. the carrier break is high, somewhere round 3.08,so unless you have 2.73 gears you dont need a new carrier to swap in 4.10s. i have been scrounging for quite some time for a used 4.10 and up d44 carrier without much luck.
i am in the process of converting a 10 bolt to SUA for the front of my rig. im putting it together with 4.56 gears from a car for next to nothing. a friend of mine runs a 10 bolt in his CJ so well be able to share spare parts.
if you want a SOA and plan on abusing your rig,you get a rusty,3/4 ton parts rig with no motor or tranny for a couple hubdred $$ round here. SOA 8 lug 10 bolt front and rear 14 bolt is a good way to upgrade your rig for not much $$
my $.02 on 10 bolts anyway smile.gif

'all i have to do'??
if ur goin spring over and want to install a Xover steering than yes, machine the P side knuckle and have an arm installed and then produce a draglink that will reach from the pitman arm to the nu steering arm on that knuckle. this will at least solve 'steering' concerns.
now shocks and brake lines are concerns that 'go w/o saying' when u use ANY lift on a vehicle.
find the services of a pro welder when u get the spring pads. the P side pad must be welded onto the cast iron diff housing. not a job for the newbie.

Yes...once they are machined, drilled and tapped they will look like this...
Comparison shot between the flatttop and round top....
