Typical woman, wants the flashy new car. Told you NFW (no Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogleying way), a man's truck is a man's truck.
So what's the highest offer on a used (I mean pre-owned) wife? Seat's in good shape, no body work needed, tends to overheat, doesn't leak any fluids, could use a little top end work, expensive to maintain......any takers?

Tell her she is free to trade in HER Windstar for HER new Durango, if SHE wants to pay for it.
Besides, from what I hear, a de-bugged FSJ is a LOT more reliable than any Durango, and gets about the same mileage. Guy I work with had one of those $250 in-tank fuel-pumps just die on him one day on the highway in his Durango; NAPA stocks them because they die so frequently.

So when is a good time to check out the wife and take a test drive smile.gif

I've had similar problems and looked into rebuilding the head. Unfortunately the parts are impossible to get, I've looked everywhere. You might as well keep her, a new one will eventually develop the same problems, if not worse, and will cost more up front. At least you know the bugs in the current model and the ways to tweak its performance now and then.

When does the warranty on the wife expire? You might want to trade her in before that happens... :D

Hey listen if you're open to trades we can talk, if all we're talking about is a d@#n Durango I think thats a bargain.

Seriously though, I think you're gonna have a hard time finding someone who wants a used wife that doesn't like FSJs here ;) I sure a bunch of us will be happy to pretend we are interested so we can take her for a 'test drive' though :D

My wife also wanted a Durango........till I bought the Cherokee. ;)
Seriously though, the Durango is not rated real high in reliability.

My wife (RBY) gave me the 93 3/4T 4x4 Burb back when I bought her 80 W/T Laredo.... now I can't drive HER W/T!!! Only allowed to work on it and modify it as she sees fit!!! :D ;)
Man!!! I love my wife!!!

Gee, guess that I am lucky, my wife actually was the deciding factor in buying a Wagoneer, she said she loves the way they look, it's something that even *I* can work on, and best of all, no car note, and registration was like $25.00....
We looked at some of the new SUV's, but, sticker shock was immediate, $30K for a stripped down base model, $50K+ for something that you can actually use, heck, I could have bought near 20 GW's for that price.

I'm with GSD_Jeeper!
My wife LOVES her Waggie.
We had a Chevy Tahoe before and the payments, insurance, taxes and all crap the broke all time, was kill'n us.
She thinks the 360 has more power (Zippp!!) than the SBC 350 that pulls the Tahoe around.
In town mileage is about the same.
She would never go back to any other vehicle.
We both really like no car payments, cheap insurance, cheap tags and so far, only minor, nickel & dime stuff broken in her Wag.
A great family ride!

Wife (ex-wife) hated the wag..... when i got the second wag... that was it...... i moved out after 3 months...... then i got waggy #3 and motorcycle #2. i lost house #2, got studio #1.
this is just ammos for your case. In fact you can just copy what Bush is doing with Saddam..... if you can't have waggy..... then there is no point in living together.... depending on how much leverage you have in the marriage... just a suggestion of the D word.... is scary enough.
Otherwise the Durango isnot very reliable... and the windstar..... is it holding up on the trany and the headgasket
Those beemer are they auto...... do you know how much to drain fluid and change filter in the trany? yes the fluid is not lifetime.... they recommend a replacment at 50,000..... it is about $500, and of course this is Kalifornia price

Michel,
I don't have the tranny with the "lifetime" fluid that goes for $50/quart.
What's with the headgasket and tranny on a Windstar, though? Haven't heard about those specific problems.

I guess I am lucky, the wife was the one that noticed and wanted the Wag. She doesn't like the money that goes into it, but she turned down an offer of $5000 for it while I was out to sea, so I guess she likes it.

expensive to maintain Have you ever seen one that wasn't? Especially the models with the optional 'reclining molars'. :D

Windstars with the 3.8 V6...or any Ford 3.8 V6 for that matter have problems with headgaskets going rather often. That among other things about them make the 3.8 V6, IMO, one crappy motor. The transmissions in at least the older Windstars didn't hold up too well either...we have had to replace a few of them at the shop, and numerous 3.8 headgasket jobs..

I think you will have better luck if you
put her up for sale on E-Bay with no
reserve. Take the money and put it into
the Jeep. Just my opinion...

Additional Thoughts:
I own a 1997 Dodge Dakota 4WD Sport with the 5.2L (318 CID for us older guys)
It looks good and it is fun to drive.
But, I have lots and lots of problems with it.
The electrical system SUCKS!
EFI brain replaced 3 times.
Also replaced steering column wiring harness Delay wiper circuit and Wiper Motor.
(Wiper Motor was okay, the fancy wiring harness and circuitry was bad.)
The OD tranny has never shifted right and now starting to leak.
The truck has been a real PITA!
I hope to get rid of it soon.
Fact: My Mopar costs me WAY more to operate and maintain than my Waggie does.

I want to know more about the windstar 3.8 problems. I got a '99 with 74k on the clock. Has ran flawlessly. I've already told her I was gonna trade of the van for a Cherokee for me and she was getting the wag. I didn't go over very well.
I'd say we need pictures to acurately give you a value for your wife :D

Certainly wasn't expecting that. Of course I'd also be concerned about "mileage"

Man, it only had 112K on it when the headgasket went.
The car now has 139K on it, and I have to say the 3.8 is the most reliable thing on the car. The rest of the drivetrain is terrible.

AMEN to that one! One of the best-all round vehicles I've ever owned. May it rest in peace.

As is the case with anything "pre-owned" you really can't make a judgement just by appearances.
Externally she appears to be in adequate condition, but I would really need to take her on a "test drive" to know for sure.
