Hey All,
I'm a new member to this forum looking to get some info. Im eventually looking to get a Cherokee 1975 - 1979...I saw my first Cherokee Chief a few months back and fell in love. One thing I am interested in....I noticed it comes in a few different types of trims. I love the white trims with the old school ornate pattern paired with the white roof...is there a certain model or year or name for that trim? Any help would be appreciated...since now im starting my research from scratch....Thanks!

Cherokee Chief has the trim with the words "Cherokee Chief" along the bottom of the door.
White spoke rims.
The trim you are referring to is probably a model 17 (wide wheel), probably an "S" model, which is another trim level.
There was also a basic wide wheel model, no stripes or two-tone paint.

thank you! it's hard to tell when things get modified and/or it isn't called out specifically....can be a tad confusing when searching for that trim style...:)

Easiest thing to do is to acquire a factory brochure for the '78 models.
Nice color pictures, something to use when you go "shopping".

ooh! great idea, I will do so....is it easy to just search for one over google or do you know of a specific site?

They come up on e-bay once in a while.
Usually a good place to buy is at an auto show. Generally several vendors who carry stuff like that.
There are also some vendors listed in Hemmings Motor News.
Google the thing and see what happens.
Another thing to try is the wanted section on the forum.

There is one that looks like this that has an southwestern design as the stripe. Best thing you can do is find an Sj in good shape that has most of what you are looking for, then carry it across the finish line yourself.

There are a few here http://www.ifsja.org/ads/ads.html but are a bit hard to see. Also from the fabulous IFSJA Tech Library is this: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/misc/cheromodel.html

Is this what you are talking about?

I scanned this from my '79 Dealer Brochure. This one is labeled:
Cherokee "S" 2-Dr. (wide-wheel model)

The "S" models had the southwestern trim decals and some had the two tone paint with the different colored roof...which I think was only available in white or black.

The "S" package could be had in either a narrow track or wide track (like the one in the picture). In 1977 they started offering it in a 4 door narrow track version. Which was basically a Wagoneer with the Southwestern decals.

pretty much like this....i believe this is a '76...but no white roof....missed out on buying this puppy from a lady in Vancouver, WA, she wasn't sure on teh year, nor did they drive it much.....but i love this years grill...so that trim paired with that grill is my ideal...seeing if it exists....

Yep- The pattern on that stripe is correct for '75 and '76.
There were three differnent patterns used (if you don't count '74 which was little more than a plain white or black stripe).

This pattern was used for '75 and '76, there was another for '77 and '78 and a third for '79 and '80 (and maybe '81).

They got more elaborate each time. The '75-'76 is my personal favorite.

That is a very pretty wide track!

I like those stripes much better than ones on this 76...

Have you checked the for sale section here? You might be able to find a great rig there.

Have you also tried your local Craigs List? I have found a few really good rigs there in the past for really cheap.

Welcome to the forum. Be patient on your search and find a nice one. The NW seems to have lots of hidden jem FSJs and they come up for sale quite frequently. Check out all the local Craigslist ads. I bought a nice 3 owner 75K mile 'S' trimmed W/T off craigslist. Still be prepared to drop some coin into whatever you find to get it running well. Anyway, good luck on your search.

Oh btw, the 'S' trimmed models came in white or black tops with white or black stripes. Check out BJ's for the different patterns of the different years to help you date them.
