My 86 GW starts & runs great first thing in the a.m. However, when you start it a few hours later it idles really rough & gets worse throughout the day. Replaced plugs & plug wires didn't seem to make any difference. Any suggestions??-maybe distributor?-though it looks fine. After it sits overnight it's fine again for a few hours, then it starts idling rough again.

Control Module or pick-up coil in distributor. The control modules are know for displaying erratic behavior when they are about to die. Occasionally, a pick-up coil will go too but it is much less common. The pick-up coil and module aren't related to one another as far as the death of one will not affect the operation of the other upon replacement of the deceased.

Oh yeah, it could also be the ignition coil or the distributor cap. Usually, when the plugs and wires need replacing, so does the cap and the ignition coil is cheap to do at the same time as well. When you buy a new cap, it does not come with a pick-up coil but as I mentioned above, the pick-up coil failing is not very common so I'd consider that the last thing to check if nothing else cures the problems.

It is pretty clear that your problems are heat related and a leak at the intake manifold cannot be ruled out either. Another possibility is a weak alternator which can usually be checked for free at your local auto-electric repair shop. I avoid the chain stores for checking such things as I am not confident that the personnel are completely trained and knowledgeable about the readings they see on the test.

Good luck

Have you had any problems with your carb? Sometimes it is missed as a problem, just a thought.

Thanks for the advice-gonna try replacing distributor cap & ignition coil tomorrow. I have noticed the problem has been worse in the rainy weather we've had all week here. I let you know how it goes. Wish me luck!! Let me know if the carb rebuild works. If replacing cap & coil on mine doesn't work I may try that next.
