It's not in bad shape, the cargo area for my '72 Wag. BUT the rubber mat is chipped and cracked and the rust damage underneath (hey, it wouldn't be a Jeep if the floorpans weren't rusted!) is minimal... no holes, in fact. Anyway, if I had all the money in the world (or a nearby pawn shop) how should I redo the rear cargo area? Naval jelly, then Rustoleum covered with mildew-proof, heat-resistant insulation then carpet? rubber mat (if I could find one, like for a pick-em-up truck). You help me decide how. I'm a camper, so need something durable!

I put Herculiner in my cargo area. There are a bunch of pics of what I did on my website under projects - completed - "herculiner on the inside" down towards the bottom of the page.

Couple of the guys have lined the back of the truck with wood paneling (real wood). Looks sharp, I'll be doing this with my truck in the near future. Looks sharp, brings the exterior wood paneling inside, And its durable and easily repaired.

Mine has no wood trim anywhere; it's a plain Wagoneer, not a Grand Wagoneer. I'm trying to get a kick-butt stereo/CD player, so anything to help deafen the noise in this solid metal monster would help... That's why I was curious to see if anyone has successfully used some sort of heat- and sound-resistant insulation.

One idea comes to mind - scrape the loose rust and patch holes as needed, then paint with POR-14. It is painted over the rust because it converts rust to a ceramic-like epoxy finish and prevents future corrosion. Use some high end carpet padding for cushion and sound deadening under the carpet. Fill the body cavities with expanding foam after running the wires through some conduit in case future repairs are needed.

One note of caution on the expanding foam.....I have heard it will pull in moisture and cause a rust problem. Just thought I'd mention it. smile.gif

I concur with the POR-15. Great stuff, have used it extensively. I even discovered that you can paint it with POR-15, then apply a topcoat of good spray paint in your choice of color, while the POR is tacky. I did my entire front end this way, and the parts look identical in finish to the crossmembers which were powder coated.

I sprayed the jack compartment and matching bit on the other side of the cargo compartment with rattle can undercoating. It stunk for a couple of days, but dried rock hard and got rid of the droning noise I was having on the i-state. Worked for me. As far as finishing the cargo area goes, I wanna do like (can't remember his name!) and use wood inserts--it looked reallllly nice.
