View Full Version : One more heater core bypass question

I recently did away with the heater alltogether. And just ran the hose from the water pump, to the inlet in the back of the intake. But needed a place to hook-up my mechanical gage, so need to use the rear plug. So Im guessing that plugging the heater core supply port, coming out of the water pump, would be ok? I tried like crazy to get the plug out of the back of the thermostat housing, but even with a pipe wrench, it just rounded. So using the other 1/2" inlet port is my only option. Dennis

You talking about running a temp gage inline with the hose?

The hose has to let water flow from the pump to the intake. otherwise no coolant will circulate through the engine. You could probably put a t fitting in the hose and put the sender in the fitting, but depending on the location of your t the temperature would be different.

You might could buy a new waterneck with an open slot for a gage. I think my local advanced auto sells aftermarket waternecks (the thermostat housing).

But you can't plug the water pump.

Yell at me If I am misunderstanding you.

Plugging it is not ok unless you change the system around. You really need the water to flow through the back of the block and up out the heads/intake. This keeps it from cavitating (boiling the water into steam because of a lack of circulation). Bad things happen if you block off the water from the back port(on the intake).
This also is how the water will circulate before your thermostat opens up.

Well I guess im gonna have to remove the thermo housing, and drill out the plug. Cause I see no other places to insert the mechanical sender. Should have just got the electric type, but was twice as much, and they didn't have it at the time. It would have fit in the old sender spot. The mechanical ones have a much larger sender. Thanks, Dennis

Dennis, you can install a brass TEE in the rear intake heater outlet and get an adapter from Autometer to install the temp sensor into. The heater hose can be connected to a nipple installed in one of the TEE ports. Here's a photo of a tee and the autometer extension:

The nipple for the hose would be installed where you see the 3/8" steel line connected. Or you could change the configuration to meet your setup needs. Any good hardware store should carry the brass tee and nipple you would need. The rear intake is 3/8" NPT if I recall correctly. I think the heater hose is 3/4" or 7/8". You'll want to match the hose nipple size to the waterpump heater inlet size.

Here's the Autometer site:

Look in their catalog for:

That looks fairy simple, and they look no different than fittings I see at the hardware store. Thanks, Dennis

The thing that the hardware store won't have is the temp sender extension. You can get that from any retailer that carries Autometer products such as SummitRacing. You don't want the sender to block the coolant flow from the rear of the intake to the waterpump.

Ok, I just checked an extension I have and it is 3/8" NPT.
