Ok, I received me np-208 t-case today. Now I have to remove the 229 and install the 208, I already have the manual hubs installed so what else do I have to look out for and do? Also, have a Q-trac driveline on the way as well. anyone have pictures? Also, what is the proper fluid level and proper fluid? and proper operation? Sorry for all the questions, but do not want to mess this thing up.
For operation, do you lock in hubs and shift into neutral and then shift into 4wd, Hi or low?
just like a ford of chebby?

i believe the early 208s used 10w-30. however, it calls for dexron II or III in my 82. i believe 6 pints. when the fluid starts dripping out of the fill hole, you have reached the proper level.
lock in the hubs first. i can shift into 4Hi while in park or drive at 2 to 4 mph.

so which provides the better protection? oil or dexron? and is the fill hole right above the drain hole? on the front?

jeep went to dexron for a reason and i can only believe because it gives better protection. both the fill and drain holes are on the back along with a round tag that says np208 am. the fill is right about the drain and are unmistakeble because the plugs are so large.

ok I thought that those were them but wanted to ask first? I have never heard of dexron II/III where can you get it?

dexron II or dexron III is automatic transmission fluid and can be found at all auto parts stores, walmart, quiktrip, etc.

do you think lucas would hurt or help on an older t-case?

i have never been sold on additives. however, alot of people here swear by lucas products. did you get that 208 from bob v.? knowing him, he probably flushed it out after he received it.

I've been told there are no differences between the 10W-30 208 and the ATF. My 208 was built in 1981 and I don't even know which lube was specified. I just use ATF.
BTW, I shift mine to 4Hi while on the move. I think as long as the front and rear output shafts are turning at the same speed you are fine. Shifting to 4Lo is like your 229.
Mike - What's going on with your 208?

Keep in mind you'll need a longer rear drive shaft (one from the 208 parts rig would be fine).

I don't know whether there were any metallurgy or seal changes made when the spec was changed to ATF -- wouldn't mind hearing from someone who does. I do know that ATF has similar shear strength to 10W30, and an additive package much better suited to gearboxes than motors.
A chain T-case probably doesn't need most of this, since the operating temp is far lower than that of a slushbox, and detergents (by far the biggest difference between motor oil & ATF) aren't so critical. I wonder what, if any, friction surface requirements a 208 has. I'm just thinking out loud -- I don't know. I think I'll e-mail the fine folks at Redline and pick their brains.

We try to run tranny fluid through anything we are getting ready to take apart(even engines)and have had no problems.I haven't put a load on an engine full of ATF(just start it and let it run awhile),but it sure cleans everything out nice.My Samarai T-case has had it for a few days in place of 90wt.I'm getting ready for 5:1 low range gears and I want it clean!
