Just a short thread about getting rid of the vacuum controlled transfer gage engagement.
I just never was a fan of vacuum operated controls, especially for something as important as the transfer case. Getting rid of that was one of my first objectives once I started wheeling. My first temporary fix was to remove the vacuum junk and install a cable system. That "temporary" fix lasted about 5 years. But it was doomed to fail at the wrong time, so, a few years ago I started picking up floor shifters and parts at swap meets. What I ended up using was a transfer case shifter out of, well I'm not sure, but an XJ or some GM vehicle. Any ways, I removed the trans cover and started test fitting. It only required a small tweek to the arm and it cleared. I bent some 3/8 rod to make the arm linkage and welded it to the end of the OEM link. Next I fabbed a small shift gate to positively hold it in 2wd and left the 4wd gate long. The spring in the shifter holds it in the 2wd gate and a Clutch pedal spring pulls it into 4wd when the shifter is slid over into the opening. Re-installed the carpet and installed a Mr Gasket shift boot and walla. Positive transfer case engagement.
Now to give it a real test at Thrills in the Hills at Hot Springs.

I was just about to ask a question if anyone has eliminated the vac. source for mechanic engagement.. Do you have pics of the shifter and rod you used? Thanks

Very Nice!
I'd love to see some close up pic's down in the hole.
I'm working a 208AM swap on a buddies '83 Chero and would love to work around the existing linkage with minimal down time and easier to find parts.

One of the members from Alaska took a Dana 300 twin stick kit and modified it for a 229. It looks super slick and worked well. 2WD-4WD on one stick, 4H-4L on the other.

Hey guys,

If I had know there would have been this much interest, I would have taken more pics.

I'm not sure what the shifter came out of so I can't really give much more info.

Just about any floor shifter for a transfer case should work with some modification. Perhaps the one you find will have a shift gate and lock already to use.

I do like the idea about the twin stick shifter.

Here is a pic of the linkage.

i think he's rockin an np229, and this thread is about how he deleted the vacuum switch on the dash in favor of a more reliable manual shift lever coming through the floor... again, i want exactly what you have, guy.

Its actually the 229 case, not the quadratrac.

Nice job. Mine is giving me fits and was having similar thoughts. Just wish you knew what it came out of. I guess I need to go back to the J-yard...
