I fixed all the Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley leaks and finally took it in to get inspected. Of course it failed.
My Numbers are:

Required/Reading/PassorFail
CO - 6.00%/5.14%/Pass
CO2 - 4.86% - Pass
HC - 600PPM/1940PPM/Fail

It's a 77J10 and the guy at the emissions place was pretty nice. He said the HC had to be either a carb in need of major work or need new carb. What do you guys think? Should I try to rebuild the carb? If I get a new carb, what should I get. It's a 360 4v with a TH400. Also, I'm a bit beyond what I would normally do here, so what tools do I need to replace the carb? Will I need a timing light and or vacuum system? What should I look to buy? Thanks for your help.

Hydrocarbons is essentually unburned fuel. If may be gas that has partially burned to form methane or another lighter form of hydrocarbon, but for whatever reason, your gas isn't getting burned all the way. You could try leaning out your carb (just a little, you don't want any noticable difference in the way your engine runs) and check your plugs! make sure that they are nice and clean and properly gapped, and you may want to get a stronger coil. Good spark should help alot!

can any body else think of anything?

OK I'm game. What brand of plugs and whatnot? I need to spend $200 in parts to get a waiver if it comes to that, and I would rather not take it to one of their approved centers if I could help it. Here in MO, shops pay some amount to become blessed by the emissions fairy. Then only their labor costs will be allowed to apply to the $200. All the other shops are seen as no better than the owner doing the work. My 89 GW failed once and I needed it so I paid the protection money. They charged me $110 to hook it up to their machine, then said it would be about $400 to fix the problem. I said how about $90 worth of 'fix'. They said OK, replaced some cracked hoses and charged me an even $200. What a scam. Anyway, I will go by the Zone tonight and get plugs, wires, air filter and cap and rotor. Any other ideas would be appreciated as well.

Oh for it's worth, my carb is a Holley 4v and on the front of the tower section it says 1850-4 and under that it says 3574. Any help?

Not too familiar with that one... but on the 2150, this is usually the high HC when your power valve fails or is not connected to manifold vacuum

Get a rebuilt carb kit.... and replace all the parts with rubber that are more likely leaking. And make sure the vacuum lines are connected to the right places... the diagram on the valence (by the hood latch) should help you.

a new air filter (or no filter) an oil and filter change, leaving the breather tube discoed from air filter and multi cans of dry gas are all work arounds that ive used in the past. fresh coil and plug wires will help too.

For what it is worth when I was a kid we used to dump alcohol in the gas to get it to pass the HC test. That and drove the thing around in 1st or 2nd gear for about 15 right before the test. Never failed smile.gif

damm here in CA if you pay $100 you don't even have to take it to the shop.....just drop by and pick-up the paper work....hahahaha. I'm a firm beliver in changing cats. It has helped me many times in the past. Might be costly for the OEM ones but if you get the fit all and put it on your self you can save big bucks$$$$$ I love working on cars thats why I have a jeep smile.gif .

The 1850 holley is very simple and easy to work on. A rebuild kit is 30-40 bucks but only get a genuine Holley kit, not an aftermarket. The power valve in the older Holleys are very suseptible to backfires so it could be blown but I think your numbers would be even higher if it was. You may have to rejet the carb by 2-4 numbers on the primary side. Where were the readings taken, at idle or high speed? Try setting your idle mixture screws at 1.5-2 turns out from seated.
