I already have in my garage a spare 30/32RH - Or TJ 3speed auto box.......but now I have a good line on a L6-226.....But before I slap the $$ down I'm tryng to figure out:

A. Although the L6-226 was the stock motor that was once fitted to my Wagon (I got it donkless) - is it the engine that I want to fit....Now whilst its never going to be a concorse rig - I would like to keep it fairly stockish....

B. I REALLY want to run an Auto tranny and since I already have the TJ box I would really like to be able to mate 'em - but I have NFIO on the compatability and I'm having problems getting good info from my net searches....

Thanks lads (& lasses?) :D

Those motors here in the US never ran an AT behind them. I would think anything needed to do that match would be one-of custom built stuff? You might try our ANZAC sister site http://home.off-road.com/~ozifsja/ . Rod in OZ and Chris in NZ might have a better idea if an AT to 226 swap has ever been down "down under" and what was involved or what's available or common. Their email mail addys are prolly on the web site. If not email me and I'll send you Chris' addy, not sure if I still have Rod's.

Thanks for the feedback Joe.
Well I've decided to pass on the 226 - seems it's simply going to be too much of a PITA to match it to any auto boxes that I can readily get.....
Now looking for either a 360 or cheap 4.0L donk....

The 4.0 would be a good choice. Since you did consider a 226 power isn't a great concern to you so don't rule out the older 232/258 motors. Those should be pretty common down there and once rebuilt they'll run forever as will the 4.0 but a lot less electro/computer/fi hassles.
I'd guess you have a Willys era truck/wag if it came w/226? If so a 360 would be pretty tough on the running gear. I'd stick with the 6 banger plan but that's just me cause I'm one of those oddballs that doesn't think much of AMC V8's.
Good luck. ;)

Sorry Joe, yeah it's a Willys Wagon (56).
There zip stock running gear left to worry about.
reason for considering the 4.0L - well as I said above I have a spare TJ slushbox & T/case...

As for the 360 - well I'm actually also looking for a rustbucket waggy and many of these come with a 360 - and effectively I'd nick the entire drivetrain....But I also understood that the TJ Slush box was upto running a V8 (stock)....
