What length is a stock dipstick tube for a stock AMC 360. I found a chrome dipstick at Pepboys for $12 that's for a 360 Mopar, but I want to make sure it'l fit before I stick it in a it hits the crankshaft. Are the Mopar and AMC tubes the same?
You can get the stock correct tube from the stealership for about $8-$14 depending on if you want/don't want the dipstick included.

Yup very different. To much of a problem to compare and match something else. I just buy them from the dealer. Under $10.00 and they fit proper. ;)

Hey Antelope, do not worry I have had this happen several times. Here is what I do put dipstick in as far as you can, take note of where it stops, mark the dipstick if necessary. Pull it back out and then place dipstick beside the tube even with mark, see if the end is at a bend in the tube, if so bend the dipstick from the end and about 3" up just bend it a LITTLE so it will take the bend in the tube a little easier. I notice when new tubes are installed it takes a little more effort to get the dipstick to go in. ;)

Get this>>>>the dipstick tube on my 258 sometimes comes out of the block when I pull the dipstick. It always goes back in very easily. I don't mind this at all because it is easier to see the hole in the block than it is to see the top of the tube and try to get the dipstick back into it. Its not in a good location for easy checking of the oil.

I just went through this. The Ford and Chevy dipstick tube diameters are larger then the AMC tube. I bought an AMC tube from a Jeep dealership for just under 7 (US). The dealer had to order in a two pack (only way he could order me one) and I ended up buying both (around 14 US). I figured I would try to get the first one in without removing the exhaust manifold. I got it in but I had the tube outboard of the exhaust manifold and the dipstick didn't want to go in. So I ended up removing the tube and the exhuast manifold and installing the second tube. The tube is now in the right place (beween the blck and the manifold) and the dipstick goes in and out real easy.
