Hey all I just got a new holley with electric choke (since this was the only way to fix the backwards idle holley I bought before I knew better) any ways, where should I hook up the positive wire, I know it should be a 12 volt switched source but where is the best place under the hood? this is on my 77 j10. could I hook it to the solenoid on the fender or is there someplace else? my truck originally had a mc4350 with exhaust heated choke so there is no old wire.

I had mine hooked up to the starter solenoid for a while and it seemed fine. However, you don't want to run too much power through those small terminals on the starter relay. It might be best to hook up a relay from the solenoid (or other switched 12v source) to provide a bunch of power for accessories like the choke.

Or just find a spare wire that gives 12v with the key on and use that. I can't help you off the top of my head, but try looking at a wiring diagram or just stick some wires with a trusty multimeter.

Why not use the switch arrangement used on the 360's that had the 2150
carburetor? What could be easier?

Mine is hooked up to the smog circuit. The one that has the old 2bbl choke, the fuel vap valve, the idle solenoid, etc. I think it's an orange wire. However, on a 77, I have no clue, but I suspect there should be some kind of circuit like that.

The PO hooked mine up to the coil, could this be whats causing my battery to drain when I forget to turn off the neg disconnect knob? Almost seriously burned myself once while adjusting the choke with the key still in the ignition.

mine doesnt have any smog stuff at all except for egr and thats disconnected. I have a manual trans without A/C so I dont have any idle solenoids, where does that switch arrangement hook up too?

Try to get a look at the wiring diagram for the '79.
I probably have it, but won't be able to get to it until later tomorrow.
Try to get the factory switch that fits on the block near the oil pressure sending unit.
Power to that and to the choke.

okay that would be great if you could pm me the wiring diagram later ill try to see if I can find that switch is it something I can buy new or do I have to pull it off of a 79 at the junk yard.

I probably have one, and might have the plug and wiring that goes with it.
I will have to check.
The switch would be '79 and newer. Should be readily available at the junk yard, along with the wiring.

The switch goes on a "t" with the oil pressure sending unit.

I'm sure he'll have it. Met him last Friday. Let me just say there is not much he doesn't have! He is also a great guy which seems to be common among most members of this list.
