Ok, looks like the 73 is exempt... trying to find details on the 82.

Specifically, I have the cat, egr, A.I.R pump. But I am running an aftermarket Truck Avenger and Edelbrock manifold.

There is a visual and a tailpipe check. The rules are very strict. All original devices must be present.

The Edelbrock manifold should pass, but only the original carburetor is allowed. If it came from the factory with a 2V, it's got to have the original 2V.

The TBI kit from Howell is allowed, but only the kit that is CA Air Resources Board (CARB) approved. No aftermarket carbs will pass, AFAIK.

IT's California. You can have no emissions. None. Ever. At all.

Well, it doesnt have to be the original carb. It just has to be a 2v card (as a 4v was not offered in that year) and have a valid CARB number. Also, the edelbrock intake has to be the intake with EGR, the one without won't pass. The edelbrock 1400 does pass CA emissions, but only on vehicles that came with a 4V carb. My J10 passed with a non-factory carb (It came with an electronically controlled BBD, it passed with an older non-electric BBD).

As for how often, in some areas (like where I live) we only do emissions test when a vehicle changes ownership. However, in more populated areas, its every 2 years. Carlsbad may be rural enough to be only during change of ownership (or when you register it here in CA).

We do no have safety checks here like they do back east. So no brake checks, rust checks, or any of that.

Overall our smog testing is not that bad. I have never not been able to pass it. Even with my brothers truck that has 218k miles on it.

What about Air Cleaner, Charcoal vapor canister, and fuel vent lines?
Carlsbad is right next door to me, it's 2yr smog checks & change of ownership, etc...
Standard San Diego county enhanced smog test.
A temp. tag if you don't pass is $50, no title or tags without a valid smog cert.
The temp tag is only good for 30 days, and you only get one in a 2yr period.

Pretty likely they'll fail you with a 4bbl...technically the intake is a failure point too.
