hey guys, before you ripp my head off like one of the boating sites I visit let me first state that I am current;y bidding on a service manual on ebay, however being a man of little patience I woul dliek to start develling into a few mnor problems
My oil pressure guage shoots straight to the top, I want to check my ground, & sending unit buT i can't seem to loacate it, can you guys direct me to the right location.
also my motor seems to run mych better with the temp get close to 220, this seems like a safe running temp, is it okay for me to put a thermostat that will also wit to run that hot, current'y I have a 195 thermo, but it seems to just barely get out of the "blue"
Lastly where is a good location for parts such as the EGR system, and fuel sending unit?
Thanks for any help.. great website glad do be a fsj.
Thomas
It'd help if you included what motor you have and what year.

I second Joe's request. Do up a signature that has your FSJ info in it so we never have to ask. By location for EGR and sending unit do you mean parts source?
Assuming you have a 360 the oil pressure sending unit is attached to the oil pump which is what the oil filter is attached to. You can almost see it clearly from above by looking by the alternator.
As far as operating temp goes there is a good chance that either your temperature sending unit is inaacurate or your gauge is. Take a candy thermometer and tape it to the main coolant line from the top of the radiator. Get the vehicle nice and warmed up and check the temp. This is an accurate way of getting a real reading. Go from there as far as what you want to do. On my rig, the gauge shows that I'm running really cool all the time but the candy thermometer show I'm where I need to be. I haven't changed anything as far as sending unit or gauge because I know my relative starting point and anything to the right or left is abnormal and gets addressed from there.

Just so you know, if your FSJ is an 86 or newer, the gauges are strictly for entertainment, and shouldn't be used for any other purpose.
The gauges in the newer wags are lousy, if you have one of the afore mentioned wags, then get a mechanical gauge and put it under the hood (no mess that way if the tubing springs a leak), and see what the pressure really is.
The sending unit is attached directly to the oil pump, which lives immediately under the alternator. Passenger side of the vehicle, next to the battery.
220 is the avg temp on these critters, you can safely put a 160* thermostat into it. The temp rating on the thermostat only tells you at what temp it will open up.

If you are running too cool with a 195 thermostat, you're the only one around here with that problem. Eveybody else is usually running too hot. My oil pressure gauge is always pegged too, I bought a new sender and am going to install it with my next oil change.
About that oil pressure sender - at one point, my sender wire was hooked up to a post on the back of my alternator (don't ask  ) and it caused the "oil pressure" to be pegged. I simply removed the wire from the alt and installed it on my oil sender unit and "Walla!" My oil pressure started showing on the gauge. On an AMC 360, the oil sender is right down there on the lower passenger side of the engine near the oil filter. HTH + welcome to the forum! :D

I sorry I faild to mention it's a 1988 with the 360. How concerned should I be about the oil pressure, do the oil pumps seem to fail often. also how do you guys feel about adding "seafoam" to the oil? in boating I do it all the time on my 2stroke and my 4 stroke
I was wondering where to find an EGR vualve & pipes , mine on the passenger side is missing, and the pipes that tap into the exuasht has broken in one spot I was hoping to replace the parts with new parts
also my fuel sending unit is shot, there is lots of wear on the "finger" that is attached to the float, I tried to repair it accordingly to the tech tips found here on this site, how evey my soldering skills are not very great.
thanks for your help guys

My oil pressure gauge works when it wants to. Usually if it is working it is in the morning or the first start of the day. If I brake at any speed over 25 mph it instantly pegs, then I accelerate and it's working again. Probably a bad wire but I haven't had the time to track it down. I have cleaned the connectors but that hasn't helped.

Wgon':
You are wise to verify the gauge readings first, particularly in light of your observation on the water temp. Iffy grounds are one source of goofy readings. One mechanical cause for actual high oil pressure at the sender is a stuck pressure relief in the oil pump/filter housing. This could be from varnish because of infrequent oil changes, prolonged sitting, or physical damage. Early V8 CJs were prone to such damage if an axle bump stop fell off, allowing the axle to ding the pressure relief. I've seen a few of those explode the filter rather dramatically! I think that the housing was re-designed in the Seventies, but of course am too dang lazy to verify this.
Welcome, good luck, and please keep us posted so we don't remain so goldang ignorant.

If you are running too cool with a 195 thermostat, you're the only one around here with that problem. Mine runs cool - that big fan moves a huge amount of air ! (The rad and the ac rad are both clean with no mud to impede airflow)

To answer the question on where to get parts, a very good online source is www.bjsoffroad.com (http://www.bjsoffroad.com) and most chain stores will be able to get the majority of parts that you'll need.
The stealerships are carrying fewer and fewer parts and will soon not be a concern.
Now, to the important stuff. On, or about the 2nd of April, there will be a meeting of FSJ'rs at Keller's in North Dallas. If you're interested, look in the events forum. Hope to see you there! ;)
