View Full Version : Road Trip Part 3. KY to Al to TX,OK,AR,@KY
Here we go again!!!!! I'll try and get some pics up when I return from these trips. I do take a few.
After an agonizing start to the last trip the route was changed drastically. All is well and I checked back into home before going on with the rest.
Now I leave to deliver a sweet Camper Special to AL.
Then it's on to TX with a drop on the way to get my topper.. Finally.. This was suppose to be stop #1 because I was to be camping the last 10 days. < details will be coming:mad: >
After Dallas I'm going shopping for sheet metal at JeffinNorthTX and then to Tulsa to grab a J cab for PigSmith.
Anybody needing anything along that route get ahold of me(serious inquires only), you'll find a way. I'll have no email/web access.. Your item must be paid/ or arranged for by you I have nothing to do with that. I'm just the delivery man, I prefer small cash donations;) . Not trying to get rich just trying to re-coop some unexpected expenses incurred on this vacation, if that what you want to call it..:( ..
Then it's back home to drag all my uneeded wheels and tires, motorcycles, cars, van, and furniture to the curb for the U.S. 127 Yardsale Aug 6-.. Crazed bargain seekers come from all over the U.S.A. hoping to snag that special deal. It's a 3 ring circus, literally.. Good time for me to scale way down and get ready to move.

Good Luck on your trip Tom - where are you moving to?
HOLY SMOKES !!!!!!
When I was getting ready to cross into KY via the confluence of the Mississippi River and Ohio River I was glancing at the sky as it was turning black very quickly to my north.
I figured if I can make it across the bridges before dark woould be great and then the last blast of highway to the house. These bridges are very narrow and very, very long old steel structures. Very beautiful in the daylight. You go across one river then touch down on the point of land for 100 ft. then up on the next bridge. Each bridge is about a mile long, I think. Seemed like they were a 100 miles tonight.
The storm hit about 1 mile before I hit the first bridge. I was tagging behind a semi for security from oncoming trucks and cars. A semi completely fills a lane and when 2 pass it each other they look like they hit/rub each other. Just as we hit the bridge itself all Heck broke loose. The sky turned totally black and the rain was incredible. I was following tail lights of the truck about 50ft. in front of me at 20 MPH. There was alot of truck and car traffic and the wind was swaying the vehicles on top of an all out downpour.
We touched down on the point of land and the truck continued to get on the bridge across the Ohio River so I followed as there is nothing on that point and noway was I gonna stay there in that storm.
The trip across the next bridge was even worse and seemed to take an hour. When we hit down into KY there were tree branches cracking off and blowing across the road and onto my truck. The semi and I kept going as there was noway or nowhere to stop without blocking the lane. These bridge approaches and landings are actually floodwalls and only 25 ft. level on top. Long slopes to the river bottom below in places.
Anyway I made it and kept going until Princeton where I tried to get a room. NO vacancy from there to Central City, KY so I crashed in the rest area for a break. After snoozing for an hour the rain had finally quit, so I decided to sleep in my own bed this AM.
Watch the weather channel for some good radar of what I drove through.
There Was a tornado when I crossed the bridges and Louisville was shut down as I come into it this Am at 4am as they had a "100 year flash flood" happen from that storm. The highway was shut down and all traffic diverted out around the "outer loop". 4" of rain in 2 hours. Go to www.weather.com (http://www.weather.com) for info.
I need sleep.....

Holy Crap Tom! I was just watching some Weather Channel and they were showing the light storm video over the area there and talking about the tornado. Glad you touched down safely. I am familair with those bridges. Whew...
I was shark fishing on one of the FL Keys bridges with my father and a buddy back in 71 and those were some narrow dang lanes. Most these bridges had catwalks you could fish (and sleep) from. We hauled our stuff out there in the car and would slow down to get a good approach to stop and toss all the gear (Coleman stove and all) over on the catwalk. Sometimes it would take a couple passes to get everything unloaded and reloaded when the traffic was bearing down. The original vehicle bridges were built on the old railroad trestles and the rails were made of the original track. A Trailways bus met a semi right where we were fishing just after sunset. We ducked and saw sparks flying and heard steel and aluminum screeching for a 100 yards as they passed! We didn't get much sleep that night.
EDIT: Hello? ANOTHER Camper Special???
Good Luck on your trip Tom - where are you moving to?
West !!!!!!
Only 100ft. but you gotta start somewhere.. I'm moving into a smaller house next door. Suppose to sign a contract on my 1832, 2 story brick. The house I'm moving into is a 1895 1 story frame. .

Glad to hear you made it ok!
Here in Lexington it sent everyone to the "shelter in place" area for a bit at work. Except me because I am an idiot... I stayed by one fo the plate glass windows to watch (I like stormy weather).

So is the 1895 model an upgrade from the 1832 model? :D
EDIT: Hello? ANOTHER Camper Special???
No I got a topper for my dually and picked me .. cough,, cough er I mean Bryan, a trailer load of good texas sheet metal for his trucks.
I'll get pics up later. It takes all day for my computer to load and post through photbucket.
I'm really going to bed now..I'm in shock of what I just drove through and now it explains all the weird acting people atthe gas station and why there wasn't a motel to be had for 300 miles... I literally cheated death tonight on those bridges.. I'm afraid to go look at my trailer tires. The Cape Guiraldo,MO / Memphis,TN reports are blowing me away. Those were the ones that hit as I was crossing the bridges.YIKES!! NURSE!!!!!!!!!!
I almost got a room at 8 pm in MO because of what the skies looked like, bearing down to my north. I thought I had time to drive the 7 miles to get across the Rivers. It was moving way faster than I thought. The thought of being blown off those bridges went through my mind many times.
So is the 1895 model an upgrade from the 1832 model? :D
It's not a KY Historical landmark like the 1832 is but I like it even more. It's also 1/3 smaller and is the property that actually has all the property deeded to it that is my backyard.
You watching the video of the Memphis Storm?!?!?! I DID THAT !!!!!!

Yes you do. I always like it when people know about a road trip they are doing. I even spent a long night in Tulsa after I left Jody's place on the southside just as it got dark. Spent the next day cruising the turnpikes looking for sheet metal up to Springfield then across southern MO.
My schedule got all changed during this vacation and is only similar to the original plan... Luckily I got a hotel with a public computer a couple of times.

I did get to see Peso !!!!! That was a surprise to see. I forgot wo you sold that to, and while I was loading a cab there it was.
Dallas was a nightmare kinda. Just getting there was an issue time wise. The guy that had my topper wanted it gone that night no ifs ands or butts. I was going to stop in Shreveport for the night at 6 pm Sunday and get the topper Monday at noon. The topper was more than worth it though. Sweetest addon I have ever bought. Now it needs painted to match. At least it is close to same color. Just a different shade of 1995 Ford green. Its more of a teal and my truck is more of a black/blue tinted green. I'm new to these trucks so i haven't found a site like this one to find out all the info I need. I still need some type of literature for this F-350. Been driving the wheels off it and know very little about it. But the guy was true to his word. It was ready to go with a few minor fixes. Tires and brakes. 8000 miles on it since I bought it a month ago. This baby rocks.. 8ft.wide and 25ft. long approx and all the power you ever need, bone stock.

i just found a 83 wag at the car lot as a trade in they will sell it for what they gave for it 625 or so, the frame is in mint shape no rust on it, the body needs some rust work around the wheels though.
I got the inside spair tire mount out of it today for free:thumbsup: and there going to send it to the auction this weekend.
