Okay, I'm new to the world of carbs. A mechanic friend rebuilt my Motorcraft 2bbl (2150)? On my 360... but he doesn't seem to have the time to come and tune it, so I want to do it so I can learn how.

The motor will start and idle just great, no problems there. But it seems to have no power when I drive. The motor shakes violently and it shakes the whole vehicle as it accelerates, acceleration is incredibly slow and doesn't seem like it will go over 50 mph. The gas in the tank might be a little bit old, but I don't think it would affect it this much. Would it?

I toyed around with the idle speed adjustment, and the idle mixture left screw... but that's about it.

Where do I need to begin? Gap the plugs? Timing? Idle adjustments? I am ignorant, so please don't forget to state the obvious. All help appreciated.

Sounds more like the ignition system to me with the symptoms you describe. When was the last tune up? Hows about new plug wires?

2150 carbs are not too hard. The best write up I have seen on them is written by Micheal Baxter here in the tech section. The link is:

before you can even begin to "tune" a carb idle speed and ignition timing must be correct - for example too high of a curb idle speed will cause an off idle stumble - ??? you might say - because of improper postitioning of the throttle plates in the venturi the transition circuit of the carburetor will be bypassed. also trying to tune a carb on a vehicle with other problems such as ignition, vacuum leaks, compression etc etc would be equivolent to taking a leak in the wind
