Well took the 90 GW with 176k, all orig (no history if motor/trans been done, but they look, act solid) from CIncy to Cumberland falls. Ate tons of gas up and back, prob about 8-10 mpg. She did great. Did not burn a bit of oil. I was shocked. Pulled a 12ft popup camper for a weeks worth of camping. I would not feel safe pulling much more to be honest.

Have you always done all of your own maintenance?

You got more confidence in a FSJ at 170+K miles that I would. Glad it worked so well.

I have been driving it for two years, have put 20k on it. It has always ran great oil pressure. Water temps before and after water pump have always been grat under most any conditions. New plugs, wires, coil, power steering pump over those 2 years, brake work. Just about all that has been done to it. Some I have done, some I have paid my shop of over 25 years that has also looked over the jeep with amazement of it's shape in looks and mechanics.

If AAA is not in your wallet it should be after this trip. Only a matter of time!

Ha ha ha. I even went as far as to make sure the spare tire and it's set up was new and workable. I really do not take the truck on long trips cause it is so old.

The only thing that freaks me out on long trips is over heating. Did you replace it with a stock water pump or one from BJ's?

I drove my 88 GW with 194K on it 250 miles each way to get some tires... Drove non-stop at 80-85mph on the freeway parts and only used a bit over two tanks of gas :fsj: :drivin:
Not even a hint of an issue except when I almost went off the road locking up the brakes at 65mph to stop and check out the sweet looking J20 parked on the side of the road (one of my favorite shades of green in GREAT shape... ) Was being driven at the time (parked in front of the owners house)... Later sold on CL for under $1600 when the owner ran into financial trouble  I almost bought it.
This was before I ralized the carberator was in pieces and held together with epoxy (the casting was literally cracked). Since I replaced that it runs even better.

Yea that is another thing, my carb is a reman unit that I put on about 18 months ago. The water pump my shop got when they put it on for me. Again, has d been using them for 25+ears and they have never did me wrong so I trusted them on that one.

Well if you know your rig you know your rig. I bought 87 from another guy in the army while I was in FT. Jackson SC for 2grand completely stock. Supposedly the engine had been rebuilt 20k before i bought it by the PO but the dude couldnt produce the paperwork. I drove it from SC all the way to southern AL not a singe problem and got around 10-12 mpg. Only issue i had was the oil pressure sensor somehow ruptured and was spewing oil out of it. under 20 $ fix.
Since then I have added HEI, lift, larger tires, and an electric fan. It has made 2 trips to Il and back. One to Monmouth near Peoria and one to Monmouth then to Chicago then back. its about a 900 something miles from Mobile to Monmouth. Did not have a single mechanical issue and got about 12 miles to the gallon.

Try Moab in 09 w 340Kmiles on the waggy, of course I did 08, and 07 as well, and Ouray in 02 with under 300K.
The more you drive those beast, the more you know them.
Tim, congrats on taking the trip.

Well if you know your rig you know your rig.
Ain't that the truth? In the past 8 years we haven't had many mishaps on multiple thousand mile road/off road trips. A a bad starter from NAPA that failed in the middle of the AZ Desert, but FSJ ingenuity got her rolling again.... Know thy enemy and be prepared. And don't leave home without checking everything.

to elaborate on that. The best example I can think of is my drivers window. The little bugger likes to get stuck in the down position(why do windows never get stuck in the up position) and after many hours of trouble shooting I have discovered that the only fix for this is to take a screw driver or crescent wrench and beat the tar out of window motor.
