87 wag with 38000 miles. stock drive train. no lift. have a whirling noise that keeps pace with the rpm's. been getting worse every day. any ideas?

You should be able to check the drivelines by grabbing them and twisting for play.

However....if the noise keeps pace with engine RPM not the RPM of the wheels on the road, then it is a problem in the engine...not the drivelines.

Also, I think this type of noise can be associated with wearing parts in the T-case or differentials. It should be easy to tell if the u-joints (in the driveline) are bad by the method above.

the noise keeps pace with the rpm's while the wag is moving. the noise is not in the engine.

Check all your U-joints for side play... this can be done by jacking up the rear axle and start wiggling to shaft near the joints... any play you see in the joint... it's bad replace it. Do the same with the front axle.
