All thats left to do is install fuel pump and I can crank my new engine. Its the stock 360 in my 78 cherokee.I checked my new pump compared to the old one and they are the same.It will fit but lacks a 1/2 in. or so from seating flat on the face.I did put a new cam in,could that be a problem.I dont know the proper way to install one anyway.I thought you slapped it in there and bolted it up.I tried turning the motor over.By the way it looks I am guessing the cam rides on that lever and works the pump. Please help I need to crank this monster!!!!!!!

Yes, the pump does ride on the cam. I doubt if the cam itself is the problem, but I guess it could be. Putting on the fuel pump is little bit of a pain, as you've found out it's hard to get it to mount all the way. You will not be able to insert it all the way and then just bolt it up do to the pump arm having resistance. You should be able to get it in there enough though for the threads to bite, then the pump will go in as the bolts tighten. If you getting too much resistance, the arm is not properly riding on the cam, so don't force it. I think it's best to put the firewall side bolt it first. Not all the way the first time through, but make sure that side goes all the way down before the other one. It could be the opposite bolt - the instructions should tell you that.

Make sure you are not trying to put in on upside down. I did this for about 10 minutes and I had just taken the darn thing off the day before!

The threaded part goes on top.

I also had a problem because I put the line from the fuel tank on before I installed the pump. One of the hose clamps was catching on something and I couldn't push it in.

Along with what was previously said, try bumping the engine over to you find the low side of the cam. Becarefull not too strip out the threads in the aluminum cover. Make sure your hands are clear if someone is helping you. Sounds like you are on the hide side and it's creating too much resistance.
