Hi, I finaly got myself the wagoneer I always wanted. Been driving and loving it for a couple of months now. The other day my wipers stopped working so after deciding it was the motor I went and ordered a replacement. That night I pulled the old motor and took it to the store the next day. Long story short, it is not matching up with any motors the counterpeople can find. What I find strange is the motor has a splined shaft and a square plug. I am going to add pictures to this post. If you guys can't help me I don't know who can. Thank you in advance for any help.

Try them------------

I've sold one FSJ to them and I've heard good things about them.

Not sure about the '89 manual, but the '70s manuals have instructions on how to bench test a wiper motor. Most problems will result from switches and wiring, not from the motor itself. How do you know the motor is broken and not the wiper switch? What are the symptoms? Not much detail in your post.

Also, there is a park switch inside the motor which can be a problem.

by changing the harness plugs from the wiper motor of my old 88, I was able to use a wiper motor from an 84 wag in its place. All I did was chop the wires close to the motor and but splice them to the wires on the 84 motor. The 88 motor is a POS compared to the older one. The drive is a wimpy press fit compared to the more robust 84.

I am not one hundred percent certain that it is the motor. The last time they worked they were sluggish when I first turned them on. I didn't think anything of it at the time and only remembered it the next time I went to use them and they wouldn't. My first thought was that it was a fuse. I checked and it was fine. I took a test light to see if the motor was getting power and the red lead was hot with the key on. This is why I assume the motor has gone bad. As far as putting in an 84 motor do I have to get the whole assembly, meaning the mounting plate and arm that attaches to the motor? I have to fix this soon, every time I take this truck I just know it's going to rain.

I'm hazy on the details, this was over 10yrs ago, I did this. The WM is screwed in place on the fire wall and there is a press fit of some sort holding the motor drive to the arms. It wasn't a real PITA , I did it on a Sunday afternoon 'bout Xmas time.

If you don't have the factory manual, take a look at the '82 manual here - http://oljeep.com/edge_82_tsm.html - it's likely the same wrt bench testing.

The older motors have a power wire, a ground, and two field wires. Some of them are hot-switched (switch the power on to run), and some are ground-switched (ground the motor to run it). I think the newer ones are hot-switched. If hot switched, one wire is hot all the time (to the park switch), and one or both of the field wires is switched hot. High speed is with both field wires hot, low speed with one field wire hot. The park wire is hot all the time so that the motor still has power to move to the parked position when you turn the switch off.

If you can't get it to run on the bench, I'd suggest you take it apart and clean it. Drill out the rivets if you need to, and replace them with screws for reassembly.

If you can't revive the motor, somebody here should have a used motor for you from a parts car. Should be easy to get one - they are not in great demand. Post in the want-to-buy (WTB) section. You can follow Andy's suggestion and splice your plug onto a different style motor, if you can't find the style you have.

I'd also make sure the linkage isn't binding. With the motor out, you should be able to move the wipers back and forth by hand.

hth!

Ok, I did what you suggested, I opened up the motor, cleaned it and put it back together. Then I grounded the case and put power to the two field wires. One wire the motor was slow and the other was faster. Now I was excited so I took the motor and plugged it back into its harness. When I turned it on I got nothing. Do you think this means the switch is bad? If so how difficult is it to put in a new switch and are they easy to come by?
