The gas tank in my 81 Cherokee sprung a leak last year. I pulled it out and found a hairline crack in the bottom front. I've repaired it a couple of times with some good old JB weld. It only works for a couple of months. I'm looking for some input on a good replacement tank. I figure the tank has probably gotten brittle, and will only be more trouble in the future. What do you guys recommend for a replacement? I’d even be interested in hearing about some good tank upgrade alternatives. I was surprised to see a plastic (maybe its fiber-glass) tank under that thick metal shield. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

welcome to the forum, gotta love those MOPES!
I suggest looking for a good steel tank from an older chero, those plastic ones kinda suck. I had the one in my j10 leaking for a year before I replaced it. My fuel economy is alot better now!

the tank prolly took a hit some time.its not repairable. i would replace it with one from a junkyard. the poly tanks have never given me any trouble. ive had several troubles with steel tanks however

While your doing your tank changeout make sure that your sending unit and fuel guage are fine and the seals are good. Riverbeast found that a tank from a '84 bronco will fit tween the rails in the rearend. If you maybe wanted to add another tank.

If you do a search in the tech section there was a post with a compacy that makes replacement tanks. Also there is aero tanks http://www.aerotanks.com/ but I think the other place is cheaper.

I found a big leak in my tank and it's such a PITA to drop, I unbolted the body mounts to raise the body to find th leak. I ruptured one of the rubber gaskets for the front breather and it would leak at angle and full tank. So I sealed the leak and hopefully that solves it. The problems never seem to end.....
