I have a Wagoneer with the VIN 1414017 209818. It has a razor grill and the thick chrome bars around the tail lights. Can anyone help to tell what year it is by that VIN?It's a Kaiser Jeep by the way.

We have VIN decoding pages: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/figures/vin68-70.html
Looks to me like a '68-70 4-dorr Wagoneer with a 232 cid inline 6. The serial number 209818 is sequential within that year range, and does not distinguish the year. If you can find someone with a similar vehicle and a known build date, you can narrow it down.

I have the NADA books of the era.
They list the VIN numbers for the model years, and will give a range of numbers for a particular year.
I don't know how accurate the information is, but I would think it is based on data supplied by the manufacturer.
It will take me an hour or so to dig through my things.

Ooh. The engine has the build date on it, if it still has the original engine. That will be very close to the chassis date. Middle of the side of the block, under the spark plugs, stamped on a platform.
I'm sure there's a Rambler site online that will have the build date code for an early 232. If you find the code and can't find the site I can help, but I have to scoot right now.

Lol I haven't got the title. Not yet anyways.I'm still working the deal with the guy, that's why I was trying to see if you could tell from the VIN. I'm not sure that he has the title either though. Maybe only a bill of sale. But that's not what I'm interested in right now lol.

If it were a '70 it would have a tag on the inside of the driver's side door frame with month and year of production. Of course this might have fallen off seeing how old the vehicle is, but judging by Vin compared to our '70 Wagoneer I'd say you're prolly looking at a '68 model. But I'm not 100% sure on that.

I was also wondering what is the plastic-type bag on the driver side fender under the hood?It's red and says Jeep.

The engine build date codes are here: http://www.amcrc.com/tech/engine.html
So, if it's a '68 232, it could be, for example, 107L25 where
1=1968
07=July
L=232 cid, 1V
25 = day of the month
2=1969, 3=1970, etc.
Remember that the model year starts around mid September.

Windshield washer reservoir. It's cool to have an intact one.

It's later than '67, that's all I can tell you.

I agree the VIN falls into the system used between 68-70.
If attempting to use the 232 build code the first digit is the year 1=68, 2=69, 3=70 but that doesn't tell you what model year it was installed in but gets you in the ballpark.

oh okay. Well I found out the build code is 111L21.So it's a 68 then probably?

Wait, wouldn't the code mean it was built november 21,1968?So would it actually be a 1969?

That eng build date is 21 Nov 68 so it would be installed in a 69 or later model year. Model year change over each year is usually Jul-Aug so by the time that motor was built in Nov the 69 models were already rolling down the assembly line.

Most likely a 69 model but could possibly be a 1970 model wag too depends when the motor was dragged out of the warehouse and actually installed. By 71 the 232 was dropped in favor of the 258.
