just for confirmation,when useing a light the timeing mark on damper bounces around a bit.this would indicate a worn chain,no?thanx for the help

Usually a worn Chain, but could also be caused by a rough idle.

worn chain yes and worn distributor bushings also and yea what Pete said

btw there is 2 hundred thousand+ on this motor.i dont burn oil and for the most part runs prety darn good

It's also typical depending on the performance of your engine. But with 200K, I'd agree with those above!

I used a Summit set and had no problems, esay install. I have not heard anything bad about any name brand chain.

Just get a true double roller chain, Cloyes is the brand I use..................phil

Rough idle can definitely be a culprit. How is your idle?? Have you hooked up a vacuum gauge to check manifold vacuum? Does the needle just set there nice and pretty? Or does it jump around or "flicker" back and forth??
You might also hook that same gauge inline on your distributor and check the vacuum there, to see that you are getting a nice "smooth" pull. And check it thru the rpm band.
