Look for ASE certification, talk to friends, and by all means stay away from the dealer - these rigs aren't rocket ships, and you don't need to be a surgeon to fix them..

Maybe someone in the exact area can give you a name, but most people on here are DIY'ers.

Check Mayport Motors, just outside the Mayport Naval Station on Mayport Road, I think it was around the 2800 hundred block or so. It's been a few years since I was stationed there, but when I was there, that garage had the best reputation around, bar none. Small family outfit, honest, quality work. Make sure it hasn't changed hands--I doubt it would have, as the same father and son had run it for a long time--but check anyway.

you could try beach buggies and 4x4s on mayport road, they specialize in jeeps and have had friends swear by their work. Also conrads automotive on beach, blvd( just west of :08 seconds night club)does good work, all of us from the club take our vehicles there and get great work and service. ive never had my cherokee the but havent had to yet. knoks on wood.

Wage,

I have a mobile mechanic in Jacksonville who I would recommend highly. Call me at 783-9257, and I will put you in touch. He charges alot less than the shops. Very experienced hot rod builder, knows t-cases, trannies, and rearends too. The best auto electrician in town.

What part of town do you live?

Wage:

What is wrong with your rig?

I have learned as I have gone, if I get to confused I get with the guys on the site and they offer enough info to get me headed in the right direction. This way if anything breaks I can at least get it fixed enough to get home.

There is also a Jeep club in Jax that meets at Buffalo's on Youngerman Circle in the Orange Park area. Some of those guys are a great source for info.

Get in touch if I can be of any help.

Cliff: One of my contacts with the Fire Department claims to know you...said you have a really cool car...not the Wag :D

Merc69,

Thank you for the FYI. Actually, nothing is wrong with the rig. In fact I don't pick it up for 2 weeks. It is in Kansas right now. i was just getting my information togehter in case I need it.

This forum will be my best tool, I can tell that already.

Thanks for your help!

Wage, I have a 401 powered Spirit. It was featured in Hot Rod a few years ago, when owned by the DSPO. It's a much nicer (and faster) car now. I used to have a beautiful 74 Javelin - sold it to buy the Spirit. I like the Spirit, but I miss that Javelin. I have owned 5 AMC's and 2 Waggies. Currently restoring another Spirit with my son - his first car.

I didn't realize there were so many listers in Jax. You guys want to hit Buffalo's some night, when the Jeep's meet?

The Jeep club meets not this weekend but next (the third Saturday) as the next meeting. I was the only one there with a real Jeep last meeting last week. There were a couple of them eyeballing my rig for parts :D Just had to warn them off a little ;)

Of coure my rig may have looked like it was there for parts, no interior except a driver's seat I was able to install only hours before I drove it to the meeting. I really need to find some time next week to adjust the shift linkage. I have first and second maybe third but a lot of slip between shifts.

Oh well, I guess I need to get back from the road before I can play.

Merc and Wage,

Gotta work next saturday, although I might be able to go in late (work nights - currently on active duty with USCG).

The third Sat is also the hot rod cruise just down the road from Buffalo's. We could take in both. I will have to bring the Jeep and my Spirit.

Merc, there's a CJ guy in town who buys up Waggies for sale, and strips the diffs. Apparently the FSJ diffs are stronger. That's why they were eye-balling your FSJ. What side of town do you live.

I am on the westside, Cedar Hills area.

Wage, FYI I have also heard good reviews of North FL Off-Road, Forest Street near beach Blvd.
