Anyone ever use one of those honing thingies with the little balls on the end? Looks like a funky glass cleaner.
I just want to clean up the inside of the cylinders and put on new rings.
Will stock rings work after? I think they would?
Don't want to go crazy on the engine, just need it to run ok for a year or two while I build the rest of the jeep around it. I'd like to drive and build at the same time.

Yes that is the best style to use if not familiar with finish honing the bore. However be sure you use a ridge reamer. You will do damage to the pistons on removal. Re-ring it and put it back together smile.gif

Sure will work, slow RPM and slow up and down action, you want to achieve a good cross-hatch action. Use solvent for lubrication.
Before I did all this, I'd take your 'stock' rings and insert them into a clean cylinder, use a clean piston and push the ring about 1/2 way down the bore. Then use a feeler gage to check the ring end gap; make sure it's to spec, otherwise you'll burn oil, have blow-by, and this will all be a waste of time.

My past experience is that they don't work on AMC blocks. The high nickel content makes the AMC block very hard(notice most replacement pistons start at .010 and not like .030 liek chevy's) and they just don't hone well without an actual honing machine. You just can't get a good heavy bite with the old elec hand drill and the flying balls.
