Is there a write up on the procedure to switch from the motorcrap to delco alternator? If not, can someone give me the lowdown. Sick and tired of watching the ammeter discharge at stop lights and off-road with my 130 watt procomps on. I'm pretty good with elec. stuff and have access to a shop to fabricate new brackets etc. if neccessary. Thanks.

i've seen some items on ebay that might help. someone had a high-amperage converted oem alternator for sale. seems like he makes them and sells them on ebay. i think i was using wagoneer as the search string. but, ive heard that the high-output units suffer at the low rpm end. i dont know beyond that. but i do know how you feel. i run the oem sev marshal fogs with the low beams, and 100 watt hellas with the highs. if i have the a/c or heat blower on it gets down to the red zone at a light. it idles at 600 rpm, but if i bump it up just a little the volts go back up where they belong. i tend to just not worry about it. once i get going i can see again http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

the easiest way to do it is get a 1 wire delco alt. (or put in a 1 wire regulator in a standard gm alt) These are self energizing and only require a feed to the battery to work. They are commonly used to convert farm tractors to 12v systems. If you want even more amps find a 1 wire 130 amp alt off an older diesel semi but the units are huge (the same size as the one on my rig) and a tight squeeze in the engine bay). the one wire alt are available thru JC Whitney or a good parts store.

the easiest way and cheepest is get a delco reman. alternator off a 70's chevy 350..go to an electrical part wholesaler and buy a 180 amp stator and the one wire hook up if you want. the alternator will use stock mounting. i know, i converted my '74 to the newer style. it has worked great for almost a year.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess my question is; is there only one wire coming out of the stock motorcraft regulator? I haven't looked at mine yet. So basically on the delco system is you run the lead from the battery to the alt and the lead out of the alternator to the wire that hooks up to the output side of the voltage regulator. Is this correct?

NO, What make the one wire setup so easy is that there is only 1 wire to hook up and that is to the battery. The regulator is internal and is self energizing. Your motorcraft has 3 or 4 wires coming to it and back to the regulator.
