View Full Version : A/C compressor leaking oil

Well **** if it's one thing it's another, while replacing my cam I was cleaning the A/C
compressor and painted it, while the paint was drying the compressor was sitting face down on the pulley. I came back about 30 min later and there was oil all over the place. My question is, did I jack the compressor up or can I just replace the oil somehow?

There's a bolt on top of the compressor that you remove to fill it with oil. Use a piece of coat hanger to measure the level.

There is two types of oil. One for r-12 and one for r-134a. I can't remember the names of the two. Just go to the parts store and tell em what kinda refridgerant you have and they can help ya out.

The oil level needs to be 13/16" min to 1 3/16" max.

Close the valves on the compressor lines before you remove the bolt, this will close off the comp. to the rest of the system. Check the oil level, put the bolt back and pull the comp. into a vacuum with one of the ports or you could crack open the bottom valve to flush the air in the comp. out the upper port. You will loose refrigerant out of the system by opening it up and may cause it to be undercharged. Air in the system can not be condensed and will make the system run extreme high pressures that can damage the compressor because the FSJ system does not have a high pressure switch to protect it.

The fun part is to little oil you burn it up, to much oil you can bust the valves or a connecting rod. Do your best guess at how much oil was lost and add that, run the system and recheck the oil level. This must be done when it is hot out to properly load the system and stabilize the oil level in the compressor.

Make sure the caps are tight on the access ports when you turn the valve stems in to close the valves to the comp. You will be open to the lines and the comp. untill the valves are all the way seated in.
